Star Trek’s Jeri Ryan Joins AMC’s Best Series
Jeri Ryan is joining the second season of Dark Winds, a supernatural series based on the novels of Tony Hillerman.
There is a new threat to the Navajo Nation in Dark Winds, and despite all appearances, it is not the Borg, yet. Deadline reports that Jeri Ryan will be joining the cast as a guest star of the AMC show for season 2, which will premiere in 2023. Nicholas Logan also joins the cast in a recurring role.
Dark Winds is based on the Leaphorn & Chee novels by Tony Hillerman, following Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee, two Navajo officers, as they investigate a series of crimes that on the surface seem to be unconnected. The supernatural brushes against the world of the living as murders, bank robberies, and rebellions simmer in the Navajo Valley in the 1970s. Even though Jeri Ryan’s character was not in the first season, Dark Winds made for compelling television and was renewed after its premiere.
The second season will add more offbeat and twisted characters, including Rosemary Vines, the femme fatale portrayed by Jeri Ryan, and Nicholas Logan’s Colton Wolf, an assassin whose path collides with Leaphorn’s. Rosemary will be the foil for Jim Chee as she tries to manipulate him for her own ends. The dark magic and deep mystery that defined the books and the show’s first season are sure to be continued in the second.
Jeri Ryan is not the only star that AMC has brought into its fold for new television series. The network recently debuted a new series based on the Anne Rice novel, Mayfair Witches. Alexandra Daddario, from True Detective and The White Lotus, is Rowan, heir to the Mayfair powers and part of a supernatural family.
Dark Winds is a television series produced by George RR Martin and Robert Redford and run by Graham Roland. They also produced two movies based on the Leaphorn & Chee novels, The Dark Wind and Skinwalkers, but the series is a merging of two other books in the series, Listening Woman and People of Darkness. Jeri Ryan’s character is from the novel People of Darkness, which indicates that portions of the novel were excluded to carry over into a second season if the show was renewed.
The involvement of so many figures from the two movies, including Skinwalkers director Chris Eyre, who also directed the pilot episode of the series, shows how much they believe in the source material. Working hard to bring audiences great content, they included the popular Star Trek: Voyager actress to play a central character of one of the early Leaphorn & Chee novels. Jeri Ryan is no stranger to roles that include the unusual or supernatural, and she brings that experience to Dark Winds as a guest star.
Jeri Ryan was a television actress with numerous guest roles when she played her breakout part as Seven of Nine on Star Trek: Voyager in 1997. While she recently reprised the role for Star Trek: Picard, she has also had parts in Boston Public, Shark, and Body of Proof. Fans who can’t wait to see her when season 2 of Dark Winds premieres on AMC and AMC+ can subscribe to Paramount Plus and catch her breakthrough in the Star Trek franchise.
