Jennifer Lopez’s Best Thriller Is Back On Streaming Charts
Jennifer Lopez's intense 2002 thriller Enough is currently #7 on Netflix.
Jennifer Lopez is dominating the streaming game. She and Transformers actor Josh Duhamel dominated on Amazon Prime with their new action comedy Shotgun Wedding, and now Lopez has climbed into Netflix’s top ten. As reported by FlixPatrol, Lopez’s 2002 thriller Enough holds the number seven spot on the streamer.
Enough follows Slim Hiller, a waitress, and mother played by Jennifer Lopez. Slim falls victim to physical abuse from her husband, Mitch, after discovering his affair, and must go on the run with her young daughter to flee Mitch’s violence. Slim’s escape spurs Mitch to pursue her, leading her to train in Krav Maga so she can confront Mitch the only way she has left – in a fight.
Enough was helmed by the late filmmaker Michael Apted, the director of the 007 flick The World Is Not Enough. The film received overall negative reviews upon its release, but over time, the Jennifer Lopez thriller has been largely regarded as underrated. The film had a moderate box office return, grossing $40 million against a budget of $38 million.
The role of Slim was originally offered to Sandra Bullock, but the actress backed out of the project due to scheduling conflicts, and the part went to Lopez. Apted was wary of working with Jennifer Lopez because of her reputation as being difficult, but was surprised to find Lopez was professional and hard working. Lopez said her training and intensity on Enough led her to a nervous breakdown in her trailer while filming.
Critics had mixed reactions to Jennifer Lopez in the role. Performances aside, many critics of the film argued that it exploited domestic abuse and sent a dangerous message to women about confronting male abusers. Jennifer Lopez held that the movie was about empowerment and sent the message that the power to change your situation is always within.
Despite the uneven response to Jennifer Lopez, the movie earned her a 2003 Golden Raspberry, or Razzie, nomination for Worst Actress. She was also nominated for her performance in Maid in Manhattan the same year.
Jennifer Lopez has a long relationship with the Razzies, and 2003 was not her only year for a double nomination at the event. In 2002, Lopez was nominated for Worst Actress for both The Wedding Planner and Angel Eyes, and again in 2004 for Gigli. Lopez and her now husband, Ben Affleck, were also nominated for Worst Screen Couple for Gigli.
The Razzies have roasted Jennifer Lopez with more nominations over the years, including Worst Actress of the Decade in 2010. In 2020, Lopez was nominated for the Razzie Redeemer Award, an accolade honoring former Razzie winners turning in work of artistic merit. The nomination came for Lopez’s performance in Hustlers, which she also co-produced.
Though Jennifer Lopez has been criticized by some, she has been celebrated by many more. She has led a long and prolific career as an actress, model, and musician, and her career shows no signs of slowing. Lopez will release her ninth studio album, This Is Me… Now, later this year.
Jennifer Lopez continues to top streaming charts with movies new and old, and her fans can’t seem to get enough. But for now, Enough is exactly what J-Lo fans get on Netflix.
