Jennifer Garner Is Back As Elektra In Deadpool 3
Today just might be a canon event. Deadline sent shockwaves through the multiverse with the announcement that actress Jennifer Garner will reprise her Marvel role as Elektra in the upcoming Deadpool 3. The movie will reunite Garner with her The Adam Project co-star Ryan Reynolds and director Shawn Levy.
Jennifer Garner is finally returning as Elektra, 20 years after her solo film bombed in the theaters.
Jennifer Garner first took on the role of Elektra in 2003’s Daredevil, which starred Garner’s former husband, Ben Affleck, as the titular superhero. Though that film was a miss with critics, the 20th Century Fox collaboration with Marvel amassed $179 million at the global box office against a roughly $78 million production budget.
Though no sequel came about, Jennifer Garner returned for Elektra, a solo origin story film about the assassin for hire. Since her comic book debut in 1980, Elektra has straddled the line between hero and villain.
She often appears as a love interest for Daredevil, twisting the superhero into an entertaining moral conundrum – dating a killer for hire isn’t exactly the heroic move.
Elektra is a fascinating and beloved comic book character, but her story missed the mark with audiences when it hit the big screen. Her 2005 outing as Elektra was the last for Jennifer Garner — until now.
Garner also joins Deadpool franchise newcomer Hugh Jackman, who reprises his X-Men role as Wolverine. Whisperings around the internet suggest that characters from other 2000s Marvel/Fox collaborations will also appear.
Chris Evans’ Human Torch, James Marsden’s Cyclops, and Ben Affleck’s Daredevil are just a few of the names circulating the rumor mill.
Elektra is a fascinating and beloved comic book character, but her story missed the mark with audiences when it hit the big screen.
The confirmations of Jennifer Garner and Hugh Jackman in the film suggest that Deadpool 3 will be a multiverse adventure. It is the first Deadpool film since 2018.
It is also the first to be produced by Disney, which officially acquired 20th Century Fox in 2019, and with it, film and television rights for characters from the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Daredevil libraries.
Marvel Studios has already established that Marvel films from other studios exist in alternate universes. Evan Peters, who played Quicksilver in Fox’s X-Men films, appeared as the character in Marvel Studios’ WandaVision (sort of), and Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire appeared as Spider-Man variants in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
It seems Deadpool will encounter the Jennifer Garner version of Elektra on his next adventure. Deadpool 2 ended with the wisecracking merc with a mouth parading through time to “clean up the timelines.”
As established by Marvel Studios canon, messing with time has dire consequences with regard to the multiverse, so Deadpool’s actions may incite some chaos.
Jennifer Garner Is Having A Busy Year
As for Jennifer Garner, Deadpool 3 is just one of the several projects on the actress’s busy slate. She recently starred in the Apple series The Last Thing He Told Me and is set to star in the crime thriller Can’t Go Home.
Garner will also headline director McG’s comedy Family Leave, which follows two families on opposite sides of the world who must figure out how to undo a complex body switch.
Plot details for Deadpool 3 have been kept under wraps, but set photos and casting announcements have again started online buzz about the film. How Jennifer Garner fits into the story is still to be determined, but if Deadpool is involved, it is bound to be a hilarious ride.
