Jennifer Coolidge, one of the stars of the acclaimed HBO series The White Lotus, has revealed that she was sent to a hospital emergency room in Hawaii due to a bad reaction to the chemicals in a spray tan. Entertainment Weekly reports that Jennifer Coolidge indicated she wanted to appear at least partially tan to begin filming The White Lotus (the first season of which took place at a resort in Maui), and so got an artificial tan, but experienced such significant side effects on the plane trip that was hospitalized (presumably briefly). Fortunately, she seems to have quickly recovered and her performance in the show was regarded as a standout for the ensemble cast that includes Alexandra Daddario, Steve Zahn, Connie Britton, and Sydney Sweeney

The White Lotus earned Jennifer Coolidge a number of acting honors, including a Critics’ Choice Television Award, a Hollywood Critics Association TV Award, and her first Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie (as well as Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nominations). Jennifer Coolidge will also be one of the few actors returning for the second season of the anthology show, which will be set at a resort in Sicily, and co-star F. Murray Abraham, Michael Imperioli, and Aubrey Plaza. The show was created by Mike White, who previously created the show Enlightened for HBO, wrote the screenplay to (and appeared in) School of Rock, and is well known for his appearances in reality shows like The Amazing Race and Survivor.

In addition to her award-winning performance in The White Lotus, Jennifer Coolidge is famous for acting alongside Reese Witherspoon in the Legally Blonde series of films; she has already been announced to reprise the role of Paulette Parcelle in the upcoming revival Legally Blonde 3. She also appeared in the American Pie series of films in one of her early breakout roles, portraying the mother of Seann William Scott’s character, which brought her a different kind of cultural fame. But with over 100 credits currently on her IMDb page, it is clear that Jennifer Coolidge is prepared to keep putting in the work.

Allergic reactions to the ingredients found in spray tans are not at all uncommon, with early research indicating that some might even be potentially cancer-causing. Apparently, Jennifer Coolidge found herself developing allergies to various beauty products in the last several years, of which The White Lotus tan incident seems to have been the most severe. Hopefully, the Sicily season of the show will involve no hospitalizations for the actor.

While many HBO and HBO Max shows have found their fates very much in doubt with the changes caused by the recent creation of their new parent company Warner Bros. Discovery, it seems that The White Lotus is one of the safe ones. With the kind of critical acclaim it is receiving, that is no particular surprise, so we will just have to see whether the second season can match up to the first. At least Jennifer Coolidge will still be sticking around.
