Jennifer Aniston’s Road Trip Comedy Is Topping The Streaming Charts And Cracking Up Viewers
We're the Millers, starring Jennifer Aniston, is one of the top-performing streaming hits on HBO Max.
In addition to being laugh-out-loud funny, We’re the Millers features Jennifer Aniston in an iconic stripping scene that always manages to get people’s heads turning. With that said, it should come as no surprise that the 2013 comedy is currently killing it on HBO Max. According to Flix Patrol, the film, which was directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber (Red Notice), is currently #9 on the streaming service.
We’re the Millers centers on a street-level drug dealer, David Clark (Jason Sudeikis), who barely scrapes by. One night, he notices a group of punks harassing a young and rebellious woman, Casey Mathis (Emma Roberts), and when he attempts to intervene, he is robbed of his backpack full of drugs. His supplier Brad Gurdlinger (Ed Helms) is none too happy to hear about the robbery, and in order to pay him back, David must retrieve a large drug shipment from Mexico and sneak it back across the border undetected.
It’s a risky job for sure, but with the help of a few outcasts, David might just have a chance to pull it off. He recruits Casey and teenage misfit Kenny Rossmore (Will Poulter) to pose as his children, and he convinces his stripper neighbor Rose O’Reilly (Jennifer Aniston) to pretend to be his wife. Together, they hit the road in an oversized recreational vehicle to pick up the precious cargo in Mexico, facing a series of hilarious obstacles along the way.
The film’s leads, Jason Sudeikis and Jennifer Aniston are certainly no strangers to the genre. Sudeikis spent eight years as a prominent cast member on NBC’s variety sketch series Saturday Night Live. Meanwhile, Aniston had a scene-stealing role as an overtly sexual and often topless dentist with a potty mouth in Horrible Bosses two years prior.
Their onscreen chemistry helped propel We’re the Millers to the top of the box office when it was released in theaters on August 7, 2013. The film opened to over $26 million in its debut weekend, earning a whopping $270 million globally by the end of its theatrical run. With a production budget of $37 million, that’s a lot of money in the bank for Warner Bros.
For Jennifer Aniston, the comedy is her second highest-grossing project to date after Bruce Almighty. It’s also Jason Sueikis’ second highest-earning feature after The Angry Birds Movie. Not too shabby for a mid-budget movie released nearly a decade ago, huh?
Even though We’re the Millers was a huge financial success, it wasn’t exactly a critical hit. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a score of 49 percent from professional critics off 160 reviews. The raunchy flick was far better received by everyday viewers, with an audience score of 72 percent.
Despite mixed reviews from critics, fans have pleaded for a sequel to We’re the Millers for years. Although there were reportedly discussions of a follow-up shortly after the film’s release, nothing ever came to fruition. And now that stars like Jason Sudeikis, Jennifer Aniston, Emma Roberts, and Will Poulter have moved on to bigger projects, a second movie seems highly unlikely at this point.
Fortunately, fans can always revisit the first film in all its side-splitting glory, if they’re ever in need of a laugh. We’re the Millers is currently streaming on HBO Max.
