Showtime released a trailer for its upcoming series, American Rust. The show led by Jeff Daniels (Dumb and Dumber) is a blend of a family drama and murder mystery.
Set in a Rust Belt town in southwest Pennsylvania, Jeff Daniels will play Del Harris, the chief of police of the small town. It will explore his personal troubles while investigating a homicide case, and in the process, he is trying to protect a woman’s (played by Maura Tierney from ER) son.
The trailer for Jeff Daniels’ show goes into depth about its characters. It highlights how the murder affects the town and its protagonist. The personal ties to the case become complicated for the chief as he finds the murderer. Including the pressure from the town, someone has to answer for these crimes, giving a glimpse of the small-town politics that will come into play.
Besides Jeff Daniels and Maura Tierney, the new series will include Bill Camp (The Queen’s Gambit), Rob Yang (Succession), David Alvarez (West Side Story), Mark Pellegrino (Supernatural), and Alex Neustaedter (Colony).
Dan Futterman will act as the showrunner of the crime drama. Futterman has produced shows like the American remake of Broadchurch with Gracepoint, The Looming Tower (which also starred Jeff Daniels), and Capote, which he wrote too.
Directing the Jeff Daniels series will be John Dahl (Yellowstone), Darnell Martin (Law & Order: Criminal Intent), Craig Zisk (Brooklyn Nine-Nine).
Jeff Daniels will go beyond starring in the Showtime series by acting as an executive producer. Along with him will be Michael De Luca (The Baby-Sitters Club), Dan Futterman, Paul J. Martino (Inside Game), Kate O’Connell (Narcos), Adam Rapp (The Looming Tower), Elisa Ellis (Invasion), Brian McGreevy (Hemlock Grove), and Lee Shipman (Hemlock Grove). In addition, Jonathan Shoemaker (Jessica Jones) will act as a co-producer.
American Rust is based on the book of the same name by Phillip Meyer. Writing the script for the adaption of the Jeff Daniels show will be Jaquen Castellanos (The Affair), Dan Futterman, Brian McGreevy, and Lee Shipman. It will make for the debut of Amanda Pellegrino.
The series will be the only credited work from Jeff Daniels. Last year the actor was in the Showtime miniseries The Comey Rule with Holly Hunter (The Big Sick), Michael Kelly (House of Cards), and Jonathan Banks (Breaking Bad). The Emmy winning star also appeared in Adam with Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad).
In his career that started back in the ’80s, Jeff Daniels has gone off to win two Emmies. His first win was in Aaron Sorkin’s (The Trial of the Chicago 7) The Newsroom with Emily Mortimer (Mary Poppins Returns), John Gallagher Jr. (10 Cloverfield Lane), and Alison Pill (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World). The second was in the Netflix miniseries Godless with co-stars Jack O’Connell (Skins), Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey), and Scoot McNairy (Narcos: Mexico). Between those wins, he has been nominated for The Looming Tower and two other nominations for The Newsroom in 2014 and 2015.
American Rust with Jeff Daniels will hit Showtime on September 12.
