Jeff Bridges is back in a brand new thriller called The Old Man. The FX series marks the 72-year-old’s return to acting following a two-year battle with various illnesses. He was diagnosed with lymphoma in October 2020. And after going into remission a year later, the Oscar winner said he contracted Covid-19 during his cancer treatment. Returning to the entertainment fold, the veteran star told Deadline he felt terrific, after being forced to take time off from filming the show.

Production on The Old Man went dark for 15 months, with the series originally set to debut last year. Taking his ordeal in stride, Jeff Bridges told the publication it was like living through a year and a half of a bizarre dream. But once he felt better, it was great to be back with the gang. The series is now scheduled for release on June 16th and is being promoted with an action-packed trailer. The series is based on Thomas Perry’s 2017 novel of the same name and was developed for television by Jonathan E. Steinberg and Robert Levine who previously created the Starz series Black Sails.

The story follows a former CIA operative named Dan Chase (Jeff Bridges) who has been living a quiet life off the grid for years. But his peaceful life is interrupted when an assassin arrives and tries to eliminate him. Now, the old operative is forced to leave everything behind and go on the run. He eventually rents a room from Zoe McDonald who decides to fight alongside him to survive. Surprisingly, she is able to tap into skills she didn’t know she had when she learns the truth about her new tenant.

To make matters worse, when the FBI’s Assistant Director for Counterintelligence, Harold Harper, hears that Chase (Jeff Bridges) is out of hiding, he is tasked with hunting him down due to his complicated past with the rogue agent. Working alongside Harper is his apprentice Agent Angela Adams and Agent Raymond Waters. However, when capturing Chase proves more difficult than expected, the authorities hire a highly trained special ops contractor to pursue him as well.

The Old Man features a stellar cast alongside Jeff Bridges. It features John Lithgow as FBI’s Assistant Director for Counterintelligence Harold Harper and Amy Brenneman as Zoe McDonald. Alia Shawkat appears as Agent Angela Adams, with Gbenga Akinnagbe portraying Julian Carson. Bill Heck, Kenneth Mitchell, Leem Lubany, EJ Bonilla, Navid Negahban, and Pej Vahdat also star in recurring roles.

The first two episodes of The Old Man were helmed by Spider-Man: No Way Home director Jon Watts who also serves as the show’s executive producer. FX will air the first two installments of the seven-episode series on June 16th, with the next five airing every Thursday. Episodes will also be available to stream on Hulu the next day. The highly anticipates Jeff Bridges series is produced by 20th Television in association with The Littlefield Company.
