The new Jason Statham trailer is a blast!

Jason Statham and director Guy Ritchie love working together, and we should all be thankful. Earlier this year, fans got to see the fruits of the pair’s working relationship with the heist thriller Wrath of Man, and they didn’t wait long to collaborate again. The trailer for their upcoming spy film Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre dropped today and it looks like a blast.
Jason Statham stars as the hero spy Orson Fortune, who’s gunning for billionaire weapons dealer Greg Simmonds (Hugh Grant). Helping out Fortune are his two assistants whose names we haven’t learned yet, played respectively by British rapper Bugzy Malone and Parks & Recreation alum Aubrey Plaza. Cary Elwes of The Princess Bride fame plays Nathan Jasmine, who appears to be Fortune’s employer. You can see them all in the trailer below.
By all accounts, it looks like the weak link in the heroes’ plan is Josh Hartnett’s Danny Franscesco. The villainous Simmonds is a huge fan of the Hollywood actor, and Jason Statham’s Fortune blackmails Franscesco to get him to help them infiltrate the bad guy’s organization. It seems pretty clear at some point the weapons dealer figures out what’s going on, and things go sideways as they always must in the best spy movies.
Overall, Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre looks like a fun, action-packed ride like a lot of Ritchie’s films. Aubrey Plaza’s singular snark adds a new flavor to Ritchie’s usual rapid-fire mix of British humor and stylized violence. We’ll see when the film premieres whether or not Plaza’s signature style makes for good chemistry with Jason Statham.
The spy flick was first announced last September with the working title of Five Eyes. Principal photography commenced this past January with Jason Statham and co. shooting in Turkey and Qatar. A year after the film was announced, to the month, Five Eyes was renamed Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre (via Collider).
Strangely, the trailer for the Jason Statham spy flick doesn’t give a specific release date, but instead says “coming soon.” Similarly, the movie’s official Twitter account only narrows the release date down as far as 2022. However, in September it was announced that Operation Fortune would hit theaters on January 21, 2022. So until we hear different, we’re going with that.
Operation Rescue: Ruse de guerre marks the fifth film collaboration between Jason Statham and Guy Ritchie, beginning with two beloved crime comedies: 1998’s Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and 2000’s Snatch. Next came the 2005 thriller Revolver. There was a relatively long wait between Revolver and this year’s Wrath of Man.
Back in August, the world learned the very curious news that Jason Statham would be — at some point in the not-too-distant future — starring in an action film about bee keeping. Very little has been revealed about the project, beyond Statham starring, that it would. be”steeped in the mythology of Bee Keeping,” and that its title is — fittingly — The Bee Keeper. The script is being written by Kurt Wimmer (Equilibrium), but no director is currently attached. Guy Ritchie could probably have the gig if he wanted, but we’re not sure how many directors are going to want to be around as many bees as the film will likely need.
