As always, the Marvel Cinematic Universe rumor mill is going strong and there is a doozy of a one surfacing. CBR is reporting word that Jason Segel will be appearing in the upcoming Disney+ series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law as none other than Benjamin Grimm aka The Thing of the Fantastic Four. We caution everyone to take this with a grain (or a sack) of salt; the attribution of this rumor apparently comes from 4Chan by way of Reddit. On the other hand, the Fantastic Four does have a longstanding relationship with She-Hulk and Jason Segel is a pretty big guy, so he could indeed be a fine Thing.
According to the rumor, Jason Segel will be appearing in the last three episodes of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law as a client of the titular heroine/Jennifer Walters (played by Tatian Maslany). Apparently, Jason Segel’s Ben Grimm will be fighting a defamation case and also a supervillain group known as the Wrecking Crew. It is not entirely clear whether the defamation case is being brought by the Wrecking Crew against The Thing or whether they will be taking each other one in hand to orange rock hand combat or both. The Wrecking Crew has not yet been seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and traditionally consists of Wrecker, Bulldozer, Piledriver and Thunderball. While they are generally considered comparatively minor villains, they have been a persistent thorn in the sides of most superhero hero teams in the Marvel Comics, and this could be their first introduction to the Fantastic Four via Jason Segel.
The rumor goes on to say that Jason Segel will be playing the Thing in a motion capture suit, so he presumably will already be in his mutated rock form if he actually appears in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. He is also said to be introduced as a “mystery” client who initially only interacts with Jennifer Walters via an intermediary, but will eventually show up along with the much-speculated appearance by Matt Murdock aka Daredevil.
That particular aspect of The Thing rumor might have a bit more weight, considering that Daredevil has already appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a fan-favorite scene in Spider-Man: No Way Home. The Reddit post also claims that Jason Segel’s Ben Grimm was also supposed to appear in that movie, though there is no indication of how he would have fit into that particular story. It is notable that within Marvel Comics, Matt Murdock is supposed to be from New York City’s Hell’s Kitchen on the West Side of Manhattan, while Ben Grimm is from the fictional Yancy Street on the Lower East Side, making them both from potentially rival neighborhoods.
Again, this is all rumor as of right now. However, there was also recently a rumor that we would be introduced to the Fantastic Four in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and lo and behold, John Krasinski showed up as the fan-cast Reed Richards. So if we see Jason Segel showing up as a certain orange rock monster on Disney+ soon, we will not be all that surprised.
