Jason Momoa reportedly has a new upcoming project and he is getting together with some recent Marvel Cinematic Universe writers. According to Deadline, Warner Bros has picked up a film tentatively called The Executioner, which will presumably be the part the Aquaman star will play. It was written by cousin writing team Kaz and Ryan Firpo, who were part of the screenplay team of Marvel’s 2021 film Eternals (along with director Chloé Zhao and Patrick Burleigh). There are few details of the film so far, but it has apparently been described as “Knives Out meets The Lord of the Rings” which sounds both interesting and like an elevator pitch from a reboot of Entourage. With Jason Momoa attached to star, it almost certainly will be put into production overdrive by Warner Bros, so more details will surely be coming out soon.
There are currently a number of upcoming projects set to star Jason Momoa. The actor is very much a hot property in Hollywood at the moment, and his docket reflects. He is set to star in the Francis Lawrence film Slumberland (with Kyle Chandler, Chris O’Dowd, and Humberly González), a dark fantasy adventure film inspired by Winsor McCay’s influential early comic strip Little Nemo in Slumberland; we cannot confirm that Jason Momoa will be playing a grown version of frequent faller-out-of-bed Little Nemo, but we certainly hope so. He will also star in The Last Manhunt (which he co-wrote with Thomas Pa’a Sibbett), an old West story involving both a love story and eventual bloodshed, which sounds right. And of course, Jason Momoa will be reprising the character of sea protector and shedder of sweaters Arthur Curry in the upcoming DCEU film Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
Through no fault of Jason Momoa, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has become somewhat controversial of late. As the very public and controversial court case between his co-star Amber Heard and her estranged former husband Johnny Depp drags on, a petition to remove Heard from the Aquaman sequel has been slowly gaining support. While it is currently uncertain if and how Warner Bros will edit Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom based on Depp-supporting partisans, it definitely has cast a certain pall over the James Wan movie.
While Aquaman is certainly Jason Momoa’s most famous role, he does have a few other regular roles kicking around. Although the character of Duncan Idaho was killed off in the first installment of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune series, he could appear in flashbacks or (knowing the series) be revived as a maybe-treacherous ghola. He also has starred in the Apple TV+ post-apocalyptic science fiction series See since 2019; the show was recently renewed for a third season. Jason Momoa has also been confirmed to be starring in the upcoming tenth movie in the Fast and Furious franchise, reportedly as the villain. If history teaches us anything, that means he will be one of the good guys about two movies later. The Executioner will be another potential blockbuster in Jason Momoa’s upcoming, very busy schedule.
