Jason Momoa And John Cena Are Teaming Up For A New Movie
It’s John Cena out of nowhere with the… action comedy? Yes, according to Deadline, the WWE Superstar and Peacemaker star John Cena, is teaming up with Game of Thrones and Aquaman star Jason Momoa, to appear in the upcoming Warner Brothers Discovery film Killer Vacation.
As far as the actual plot of Killer Vacation, we’re left in the dark save for the fact that it presumably involves some sort of vacation, and maybe killing. We do know that it was written by Mark and Brian Gunn, respectively the cousin and brother, of DC co-boss James Gunn. The pair worked together on the dark superhero reconstruction Brightburn, which shows they are more than willing to delve into violence. Since John Cena and Jason Momoa have apparently been cast in a comedy, however, Killer Vacation is not likely to be as uncompromisingly bleak.
John Cena’s new role alongside Jason Momoa will not be the first time he’s worked with a member of the Gunn family. He previously portrayed Peacemaker in James Gunn’s well-received but financially- disappointing The Suicide Squad in 2021. He stuck with that role for the HBO Max series Peacemaker, which takes place immediately after The Suicide Squad and follows the titular character’s life as he’s forced to join a black ops squad hunting down “Project Butterfly,” for the same organization that placed him in the Suicide Squad, to begin with. The series became one of HBO Max’s most-viewed ever, and Season 2 has reportedly already begun filming.
While John Cena has had enough experience in TV and film to prove his mettle alongside Jason Momoa, he started his career in professional wrestling. He joined the independent Ultimate Pro Wrestling in 1999 and appeared as a jobber (aptly named The Prototype) on WWF Smackdown one year later. In 2002, he finally officially appeared in the WWE and moved his way through the ranks until being crowned WWE champion in 2005. Cena still occasionally appears in WWE matches and is scheduled to appear again this December.
John Cena’s co-star, Jason Momoa, is perhaps most famous in geekdom for playing the role of Aquaman in Aquaman, Justice League, and the upcoming The Flash film. He also played the same role in Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, though that isn’t exactly as iconic of a movie. However, Jason Momoa first came to geekdom’s attention by playing the nomadic and warlike Khal Drogo in the first season of Game of Thrones. His role of Duncan Idaho in the 2021 Dune film also gained some attention, though he likely won’t play that character in Dune: Part 2, seeing as his character died and all.
Unlike John Cena, Jason Momoa has been acting most of his life. He got his first role at the age of 19, having been cast for the role of Jason Ioane in Baywatch Hawaii back in 1999. He went on to appear in Johnson Family Vacation and Stargate: Atlantis before he got his first starring role: Conan the Barbarian in the ill-fated 2011 remake of the 1982 Arnold Schwarzenegger film.
