How many massive franchises can one actor take part in? Well, if you are Jason Momoa then the answer is: a lot. The dude is set to release a massive sequel for Aquaman and will be closing out the Fat & Furious franchise in style. These we know. But there could be a return to another one on the horizon as well and it’s looking more and more like it will happen. We could see Jason Momoa return to the Dune franchise even though that might not have seemed possible after the first movie. But because of the mechanics of the story, there is a solid chance we see him back and it would be in line with what else is happening with the Frank Herbert adaptations. Warning: Some Dune and Dune franchise spoilers coming up here.
While speaking with GQ (via MovieWeb), Jason Momoa talked some about his Duncan Idaho role in Dune and whether there was a chance we could him again in some shape or form down the line. As we know, Duncan Idaho died in the first movie fighting off the Sardaukar in an effort to help Paul (Timothe Chalamet) and Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) escape to safety. It was one of the movie’s best scenes, once again showcasing Momoa’s physical prowess and ability to take up the screen, especially in action sequences. And there was clearly an emotional element as well. In speaking with GQ, Momoa did mention the possibility of returning to the Dune franchise at some point. Check it out:
“Have you read the books? Well, I mean the books are proof… so I’m not the one spoiling it here. So, you should continue reading. I love that world and I’m very happy to be a part of it.”
Jason Momoa îs referring to what happens with the Duncan Idaho character after the events of Dune. While the character doesn’t survive that final battle he does return, in essence as a ghola. While a ghola isn’t a clone, strictly speaking, it is easiest to think of it as one. In the Dune franchise, a ghola is produced from the cells of a dead person. In this way, was Jason Momoa to return it wouldn’t be as Duncan Idaho, but it really would be as Duncan Idaho. Make sense? This all happens in Dune Messiah which is the second book in the series.
Remember, Dune 2 is still covering the second half of the story from the original book. It is such an expansive saga that the story on Arrakis only went through the first half of the novel. The second will deal more with the story of the Fremen, and specifically about Paul’s relationship with them and Chani (Zendaya). We won’t see Jason Momoa returning for this movie, that much is certain.
While we don’t know when or if Jason Momoa will return as Duncan Idaho, we do know a couple of places we can see him next. The first will be in Aquaman: The Lost Kingdom which hits theaters on March 23rd of next year. Momoa will be back in the lead role for that one. And then not long after he’ll have a part in Fast X which is set to release on May 19th. So Jason Momoa is gearing up for a big spring/ early summer.
