Jared Leto Is Suited Up For Tron 3 In New Art
Jared Leto appears in AI-generated art as his Tron 3 character.
Despite 2010’s Tron: Legacy being a box office disappointment, Disney is set to make a third film in the franchise, Tron: Ares. While Jared Leto has failed to attract audiences lately, Disney has chosen him to star in the upcoming film. If you’re wondering what the combination of these two dubious choices will look like in Tron 3, Giant Freakin Robot‘s new art showing Jared Leto suited up in one of the franchise’s iconic glowing outfits.
The artwork consists of two images of Jared Leto, each time wearing a different variation of the turquoise-lined garb. The first image is a variation on the more cloth-based everyday wear that inhabit the universe’s computer-based society. The second is a more armored look, likely to be worn while riding a lightcycle — an iconic vehicle that will almost certainly appear in Tron 3.
The images are AI-Generated, so they’re likely not going to be completely accurate as to how Jared Leto will look in Tron 3. His hairstyle and facial hair will probably not be the same as the algorithm predicted, for example, and it seems unlikely that he’ll have a neon light inexplicably embedded in his forehead. Whether Leto will have a glassy dead look in his eyes is anyone’s guess, however.
Before being chosen to appear in Tron 3, Jared Leto has not had much luck in his recent films. His most recent movie, Sony’s 2022 superhero film Morbius, was a critical dud that won golden raspberries for Worst Picture and Worst Actor. While his performance in Ridley Scott’s modestly-successful House of Gucci was widely praised, the 2017 film Blade Runner 2049 was a box office disaster in spite of the critical enthusiasm surrounding the film.
The Tron franchise, meanwhile, hasn’t had a hit since the original film was released in 1982. The only other movie in the franchise, Tron: Legacy, had disappointing box office results, and the reception to various modern video game adaptations was mediocre at best. If Tron 3 manages to become a hit, it will be something of an anomaly for the franchise.
If Disney hopes to revitalize the franchise with Tron 3, its choice of Joachim Rønning as the director is an interesting choice. While the director has proven his ability to bring in sequel money with 2017’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and 2019’s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, both of those franchises were already successful before Rønning came along. For Tron 3 to be successful, Rønning needs to tap into a sense of excitement that doesn’t already exist in the public consciousness — something that he’s never had to do for Disney before.
The film’s unusual combination isn’t necessarily a recipe for failure, and it’s possible that Rønning can harness Leto’s dwindling star power to create something both enjoyable and successful. However, if Tron 3 fails to perform at the box office, it’s unlikely that Disney will take a stab at another Tron film anytime in the near future. The success of Tron ultimately lies in Rønning and Leto’s hands.
