We want you to take a moment and imagine a Mortal Kombat fighting arena in 8-bit, with actress Jamie Lee Curtis on one side, and Marvel’s Captain America fully dressed and Mickey Mouse—representing the entirety of the MCU and Disney—on the other, with the iconic Mortal Kombat soundtrack playing in the background. Following a series of social media posts mocking Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the Borderlands star outright said that the current state of the MCU is bad. The fight between the two commenced.

Bad

For those who have missed out on the viral video, during her time at San Diego Comic-Con, MTV asked Jamie Lee Curtis to name which phase the Marvel Cinematic Universe is currently in—Curtis didn’t hesitate to answer, “Bad”—to which the entire cast of Borderlands burst into laughter.

Whether this was supposed to be a joke by Curtis or an honest opinion, we can’t do anything but agree with the Knives Out star. The MCU hasn’t been at its peak since Endgame—the critical response and audience ratings reflect that—and much of that can be attributed to Disney’s content push.

Out Marveling Marvel

It’s worth pointing out that this isn’t the first time Jamie Lee Curtis has thrown a jab at Marvel; the actress previously shared on social media that her A24 movie titled Everything, Everywhere All at Once, “out marvels any Marvel movie,” especially the aforementioned Doctor Strange sequel.

Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola stated that Marvel movies are “despicable” and “not cinema,” sparking numerous responses from cast and crew within and without of the MCU.

Stupid Comments

Following her initial statement regarding Marvel, Jamie Lee Curtis also shared that she would still be open to appearing in a Marvel movie. However, following her most recent statement at SDCC, she actually issued what seems to be a public apology via an X post, stating her comments about the MCU were “stupid.” She also added that she reached out to Kevin Feige and that she would no longer play a part in a mudslinging competition over the internet.

Deadpool Responds

Following Jamie Lee Curtis’ “apology” to Marvel, Deadpool & Wolverine star Ryan Reynolds quoted Lee Curtis’ apology on X, captioning the post with “Wait, is everyone expected to apologize for slamming Marvel post-Endgame”—something Ryan Reynolds has done extensively throughout the entire Deadpool franchise.

This is particularly true with Deadpool & Wolverine, which called out Marvel and the MCU several times over in the movie—telling Wolverine that he’s joining the MCU at a low-point moment is a perfect example.

Marvel Jesus

Ultimately, Jamie Lee Curtis’ comment about Marvel being in a bad phase isn’t unfounded because the studio and its cinematic universe have been in a tough spot ever since Endgame. That particular gem of storytelling was followed by a string of movies and series that had a lukewarm reception at best, reflected by poor box office performances.

In the end, even Disney had to face the music and rethink its strategy, leading to content cuts and cancellations. Fortunately, it would seem that Deadpool & Wolverine arrived to the rescue, with Marvel Jesus setting out to beat R-rated Jesus.
