Beloved Jamie Lee Curtis Comedy Arrives On Hulu

By Britta DeVore | Published

Things are about to get a little weird over on Hulu starting on September 1, as the streamer will appease its millennial subscribers with the addition of the ever-classic comedy Freaky Friday. Starring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis, the 2003 feature has become so beloved by those of us who remember seeing it in theaters that a sequel titled Freakier Friday is on the way. Now, the movie is set to reach an entirely new generation when it arrives on the platform in just a few short days.

A Generational Classic

In Freaky Friday, Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis star as Anna and Tess, respectively, a daughter and mother who couldn’t be any more different from one another. Tess is a well-to-do author preparing to remarry following the death of her husband, while Anna is a free-spirited teenager in a rock n’ roll band who hasn’t quite warmed up to her prospective stepfather yet. When their bodies are swapped thanks to a magical Chinese fortune cookie, the pair walks a mile in the other’s shoes.

A Huge Film For Both Stars

Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan were both pretty big gets for Disney’s Freaky Friday. By this point in her career, Curtis had long been a household name as a BAFTA and Golden Globe recipient and an Emmy nominee. Meanwhile, Lohan had just celebrated her big break into the industry a few years earlier in Nancy Meyers’s The Parent Trap, with Freaky Friday blowing the lid off her career.

There’s Other Stars Too

Along with its two leading ladies, Freaky Friday also featured performances from some of the biggest names of the early 2000s, including long-running NCIS star Mark Harmon, The Golden Girls’ alum Harold Gould, and One Tree Hill star and all-around heartthrob Chad Michael Murray. The film was helmed by Mark Waters, serving as his third title following The House of Yes and Head over Heels.

The filmmaker collaborated again with Lohan shortly after the success of Freaky Friday in Mean Girls. He is also known for his sprawling list of credits, which include The Spiderwick Chronicles and Mother of the Bride.

The Type Of Success Hollywood Studios Would Kill For Today

An instant favorite, Freaky Friday brought in a multitude of generations as the older went for Jamie Lee Curtis, and the younger went for Lindsay Lohan and Chad Michael Murray. By the time the title left cinemas, its box office sales were flying high, having managed to wrangle $160.8 million against its $26 million production budget.

With its financial gain and the fan and critical reaction surrounding Freaky Friday, it’s a surprise that it’s taken Disney so long to bring the gang back together again for a sequel, but it’s finally on the way.

Coming To Hulu

Set for an arrival in 2025, Freakier Friday will reunite a slew of familiar faces for more body-swapping fun while adding some newbies to the party. Jamie Lee Curtis, Lindsay Lohan, Mark Harmon, and Chad Michael Murray will all return, while The Acolyte’s Manny Jacinto and Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood’s Julia Butters are set to join the cast.

To prepare for the excitement that awaits us in the next year, you can tune into Hulu beginning on September 1 to see Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan in their iconic roles.
