X-Men Star Embarrassed Himself In Front Of Celebrity Crush

We normally imagine our favorite celebs as having no trouble finding love when they are looking for it. But it turns out that even the biggest names have celebrity crushes, and they are just as capable of fumbling their words at the worst possible time as the rest of us. A great example is X-Men: First Class star James McAvoy, who had a major crush on Friends star Jennifer Aniston, but when he finally met her, all he could say was “So you’re Jennifer Aniston and you’re in Friends.”

James McAvoy And Jennifer Aniston

When James McAvoy was first crushing on the Friends star, he had no idea that they would ever get a chance to meet. But on an episode of Watch What Happens Live, he described getting invited to a Los Angeles party when he was 22 and meeting Lucy Liu.

They hit it off and the Charlie’s Angel star wanted to introduce McAvoy to her circle of friends, including the girl of his dreams: Jennifer Aniston.

Started Off Great

At first, things got off to a great start: when Liu brought James McAvoy over to her celebrity entourage, he “got parked right beside Jennifer Aniston.”

At this point, the Split star was waiting for Liu to formally introduce him to her crew, but that plan hit a snag when she ran into an old friend from high school. She walked away with said friend, leaving McAvoy hanging with virtual strangers and feeling generally awkward and out of place.

An Embarrassing Line

Still, he gave it the old college try on introducing himself to these people. According to James McAvoy, he tried to explain his deal as an aspiring actor, telling them “Hey, what’s up, I’m new in town.”

His Friends crush got a special greeting, though it was so dorky and obvious that McAvoy regrets it to this day. Faced with his longtime screen fantasy, all he could blurt out was “So you’re Jennifer Aniston and you’re in Friends.”

It Was Rough

If you’re cringing deep in your soul now, you should know that nobody appreciates how awkward this was more than James McAvoy himself.

He later summed up the interaction in three brutal words: “it was rough.” Looking back, he takes full responsibility for how awkward everything was and found an unexpected bright spot in all the weirdness: the fact that Jennifer Aniston herself “was lovely.”

Fan Of Friends

While he didn’t elaborate on the origins of his celebrity crush, it’s not that hard to imagine why James McAvoy ended up so obsessed with Jennifer Aniston.

The future Marvel star was born in 1979 and Friends premiered in 1994, meaning that he would have only been 15 years old when Friends premiered. In other words, he was at a very formative age when Jennifer Aniston and her killer haircut took the world by storm, so the younger man’s obsession is more than understandable.

James McAvoy Survived

These days, many geeks best remember James McAvoy for playing the young Professor Xavier, leader of the X-Men. However, with an abundance of awkwardness and a significant lack of telepathic powers, the actor ended up striking out when trying to smoothly talk to his celebrity crush.

Talk about relatable…we might not have the muscles McAvoy is rocking for movies like Glass, but we definitely have his social awkwardness when meeting our favorite celebs.
