James Gunn’s Peacemaker series debuted on HBO Max to rave reviews earlier this week. With only a few episodes left, fans are already hoping to see more of John Cena’s anti-hero on screen. But it might be a while before Peacemaker season two happens. Gunn, who is the mastermind behind the show, has been working very hard lately and is in desperate need of a break.
The famed director says he really wants to give Peacemaker a second season. However, he’s feeling the strain of taking on so many projects in recent years. James Gunn completed The Suicide Squad before the pandemic began and immediately threw himself into developing the spin-off series. Peacemaker was officially announced in 2020, with filming taking place the following year. Gunn is currently working on Guardians of the Galaxy 3.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter about the possibility of Peacemaker season two he said, “Well, we’ll have to see. I think I’m just going to collapse for a while after Guardians 3. I’m getting pretty worn out. I’ve been going pretty hardcore for the last few years so we’ll have to see what’s next. But I want to do Peacemaker season two so we’ll see what happens.”
While we wait for James Gunn to write the rest of Peacemaker’s story, fans still get to watch John Cena as the unconventional hero for five more episodes. Described as a “douchey Captain America” who will do anything to achieve peace, Peacemaker is one of the newest additions to the DC Extended Universe. The series is written and produced by Gunn who also took on directing duties for a few episodes.
Set after the film, the series explores the origins of Peacemaker. John Cena stars as the title character, reprising his role from The Suicide Squad, with Danielle Brooks, Freddie Stroma, Chukwudi Iwuji, Jennifer Holland, Steve Agee, and Robert Patrick also starring. It is also produced by Troll Court Entertainment and The Safran Company in association with DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Television, with James Gunn serving as showrunner.
Meanwhile, James Gunn’s next big project will see him head back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Plot details for the third installment in the franchise are being kept firmly under wraps for the foreseeable future. However, we do know that familiar cast members Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, and Pom Klementieff are expected to return, along with newcomer Will Poulter.
Production began in November, with James Gunn serving as writer and director. Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is currently scheduled to hit theaters on May 5, 2023, as part of Phase Four of the MCU. Interestingly, Gunn has expressed interest in working on a fourth Guardians film. In 2017 he told The Wrap it would center on a new group of characters since he planned to conclude the story of the previous film’s heroes in Vol. 3. And if a fourth film wasn’t on the cards, Gunn said he would continue to work with Marvel Studios on other projects that use the cosmic characters.
