James Gunn Confirms Next DC TV Project
As the DCU prepares to rise from the ashes of the DCEU, it can be difficult to keep track of which projects are still in development and which might be deader than the Flash’s mother.
Recently, a fan on Threads asked James Gunn point-blank about the lack of updates for his previously announced solo series focusing on Amanda Waller. The veteran director responded that while Waller is still in development, it won’t come out until after Peacemaker season 2.
James Gunn Responds To Fans
This is great news for fans who fell in love with the first season of a show that had a crazy-sounding premise: transforming John Cena’s bit player from Gunn’s The Suicide Squad into an off-kilter hero headlining his own show.
But from the plot twists to that insanely hypnotic dance sequence in the show’s opening, the series ended up being a bright spot amid various flailing DCEU projects.
Now, Peacemaker season 2 is going to take place in the DCU, and it is exciting to know that it will be the very next DC TV project helmed by James Gunn.
Peacemaker Season 2
The fact that the second season is taking place in a rebooted cinematic universe will make this show particularly interesting to long-term DC fans. James Gunn has previously stated that the events of the first season will not be canonical to his DCU but that the second season will be.
Peacemaker season 2 is ultimately going to build off the cinematic universe established by Gunn’s own Superman movie, and since the film is coming out first, it may offer us some powerful hints about which direction John Cena’s hit show will be heading.
James Gunn Not As Involved
Unfortunately, Peacemaker season 2 will inevitably have a different feel from the first for the simple fact that James Gunn will not be directing as many episodes.
Previously, the ambitious director intended to personally direct each episode of the second season, but the schedule demands of the Superman film meant that he could only direct three episodes.
He directed five of the first season’s eight episodes, and his directorial skills arguably helped the TV show feel more like a big-budget, big-screen adventure.
Peacemaker After Superman?
Speaking of big-screen adventures, Peacemaker season 2 will come out after Superman, but many fans are hoping the first season offers some hints as to what that film and other DCU movies will be like.
The show notably has a great sense of humor and previously filled each episodes with raunchy, laugh-out-loud moments that felt very refreshing after the grimdark nature of Zack Snyder’s earlier DCEU films.
Maybe those earlier onscreen adventures of John Cena are a powerful hint that the DCU won’t take itself nearly so seriously (we can only hope).
Peacemaker Season 2 Hype
At any rate, while we’re hyped for the Waller show, our hype for Peacemaker season 2 is so stratospheric that the Green Latnerns can detect it from space.
That first season was a genuine revelation, with a perfect cast, tightly scripted adventures, and amazing performances. Here’s hoping for a brand-new dance number in the credits or, at the bare minimum, a lot more of Eagly.
