James Gunn Gives Disappointing Superman: Legacy Update
James Gunn recently told a user on Instagram that he is not even slightly close to being able to share an image of the new Superman costume for the upcoming Superman: Legacy. The information came as a response to a somewhat impatient fan question asked in a comment on the DCU head’s recent Instagram post. You can view the comment and Gunn’s reply below.
While David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan have been announced to play Clark Kent and Lois Lane, respectively, there is still little known about the new Superman movie.
This update from James Gunn is surely disappointing to fans who are eager for any images or information about the forthcoming Superman: Legacy film, but it’s hardly surprising given the film’s production schedule.
While David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan have been announced to play Clark Kent and Lois Lane, respectively, there is still little known about the new Superman movie. As it is currently slated to be released on July 11, 2025, this general lack of information is quite understandable.
Such elements as costumes are often only design ideas until several fittings can be done with the lead actors, a process that has not yet had an opportunity to take place.
Still, James Gunn has made announcements regarding other DC heroes who will appear in Superman: Legacy, though he is still keeping most information about the story and the production itself under wraps. Indeed, it seems quite a bit early to be expecting things such as images of the new Superman costume or any other design elements as the film is not yet into the production phase. Superman: Legacy is undoubtedly the most eagerly anticipated release in James Gunn’s initial rollout of the new DCU with much speculation already swirling around its characters, story, and production.
With almost two years until its scheduled premiere, it would be unlikely that any images of costumes or other design elements would be available this early on a normal production, especially as such highly anticipated blockbusters routinely engage in heavy secrecy. However, the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes are currently causing delays across Hollywood, meaning there is an even greater weight in store for fans than there would be under normal conditions.
James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy is unlikely to have reveals of any sort anytime soon, especially of things like costumes as these tend to be first revealed through on-set photos. The production is, of course, nowhere near the filming stage so long as actors and writers continue to strike for fair wages and equitable working conditions, meaning there will be no sets to photograph from for the foreseeable future. Were the strikes not happening, filming would still not be expected to begin until early next year.
That initial timeline for Superman: Legacy is now on hold indefinitely, meaning questions of when James Gunn will be able to reveal anything more about the film will remain open for some time. While it is understandable that fans are eager to see images and get updates on the production, it is important to remember that there are good reasons these things will not be forthcoming anytime soon.
Audiences will simply have to start adjusting their expectations for when news and images will come out for their favorite forthcoming releases.

Whether it’s James Gunn and Superman: Legacy or any other filmmaker who might otherwise have things to share about an anticipated project, it will be helpful for people to realize that the strikes are vitally important to making sure the people who make the films and television they love are able to make a good living, take care of their families, and not have to worry about untenable working conditions.
The best thing fans can do right now for this and any other upcoming production is to continue to express their support for WGA and SAG-AFTRA and contribute to funds that are making sure actors and writers will be taken care of until the strikes are over.
