James Gunn Reveals His Feelings About Ezra Miller And The Flash
James Gunn said that the upcoming DC Universe movie The Flash was "one of the best superhero movies I've ever seen."
James Gunn is enthusiastic about the upcoming movie The Flash. According to Cinemablend, in a recent press event during which he unveiled the next steps for the DC Universe, he had some glowing things to say about the film, calling it “one of the best superhero movies I’ve ever seen.” These are strong words coming from the co-head of the studio, who has also worked with rival Marvel Studios on the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise.
During the press event, James Gunn and co-head Peter Safran were discussing the future of the DC Universe, which is supposed to begin with The Flash. He showed a slide containing a timeline of the next 10 movies and shows meant to build the DC Universe, which included Superman: Legacy, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and Swamp Thing among the movie titles. The slide was leaked online, giving us a look at the logos for the movies and shows, as well as a hint of what is in store from DC Studios.
The movie was also very well-received by test audiences according to Variety, although most of the plot has been kept a secret from the public. What we do know centers the story around time travel, with Barry Allen’s attempt to prevent his mother’s murder from having unpredictable consequences on the multiverse. The storyline is intended to introduce the Flashpoint Paradox, which will bring in new versions of the heroes we’ve seen in past DC movies.
James Gunn has infamously dismantled what already exists of the DC Cinematic Universe, including Zack Snyer’s Justice League and the recent Dwayne Johnson hit Black Adam. He announced that a lot of actors, including Henry Cavill, will not be returning to their roles as DC superheroes. Despite this, both Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton appear in The Flash as different incarnations of Batman, so not everyone in the DCU has to worry about having a job.
For The Flash star Ezra Miller, these concerns are very real. While the success of the film may save Miller’s job, Miller has been embroiled in controversy so deep it has threatened Miller’s reputation as an actor. Miller is currently in rehab, and James Gunn has said he will “see what happens” regarding Miller’s future in the DCU.
The Flashpoint Paradox allows the co-heads of DC Studios a lot of breadth when it comes to developing their superhero universe, and James Gunn’s experience watching Marvel Studios build theirs while filming the Guardians of the Galaxy movies positions him to be capable of building a new universe from the ground up. So far, this has included ending old franchises and beginning new ones, and as the premiere film of the fledgling universe, the studio has a lot riding on the success of The Flash. How it is received by audiences will do more to determine the future of DC Studios than all the slides at Tuesday’s press event.
The Flash comes out in theaters on June 16, 2023. It co-stars Kiersey Clemons as Iris West, Ron Livingston as Henry Allen, and Maribel Verdú as Nora Allen. It also brings Supergirl into the movie universe, co-starring Sasha Calle as the Woman of Tomorrow, and Michael Shannon as General Zod. The previous appearances of The Flash in the DC Universe can be found on HBO Max.
