James Gunn is bringing us two more stories from the team he assembled in Guardians of the Galaxy and then it appears that their stories might be through. Though some of the other characters might still have roles to play in the MCU, Gunn confirmed this Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 will likely be the last time we see Dave Bautista’s Drax. Check out the tweet confirming the news below:
This Tweet confirms our scoop we reported on months ago, as Dave Bautista has said before that he feels like he’s getting too old to keep in shape for a role that requires him to be shirtless basically at all times. He also was hoping to get a solo movie about Drax, but it seemed like Marvel wasn’t willing to move forward with this project. Marvel was willing to give Bautista millions to stay on, according to our previous source, but it seems like the role is just taking a bit too much of a toll on Bautista for him to keep with it.
At the very least, you can definitely count on James Gunn to bring us some closure to the character. Since Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 will be the last time we see Drax, Gunn will likely want to make sure and give him a proper send-off and a satisfying end to his character arc. Previously, Drax was on the path to avenge his family and kill Thanos. With Thanos dead and Drax finding a new family in the Guardians of the Galaxy, his character arc has essentially been wrapped up.
As James Gunn says in his Tweet, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 will be the last appearance for Drax, but fans will get to see him before then at least once in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. Gunn has said this special is one of the best things he’s ever done, so presumably, we’ll get some great Drax content. There’s also a chance that we’ll get to see Drax in the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder. While we haven’t seen Drax in the trailers, multiple other Guardians have made appearances and we know that Thor starts off the movie traveling with them, so a Drax appearance seems like a natural conclusion at this point.
While we know that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 is the final sendoff for Drax, it’s a little more unclear who else from the Guardians will be ending their MCU tenure. Star-Lord, Gamora, Nebula, Groot, Rocket, and Mantis could still have things to do in the greater MCU, but James Gunn and the actors might decide to end the arcs of some of these characters too. It could also be an MCU sendoff for James Gunn too, who is currently busy on the other side of the comic book aisle. James Gunn is currently working on the second season of Peacemaker and a The Suicide Squad spin-off with Amanda Waller. You can also catch his cameo in the upcoming third season of the animated Harley Quinn.
