The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Jake Gyllenhaal and Extraction director Sam Hargrave will be making a movie based on the comic book series Prophet with Kurt Johnstad writing the script. The Studio 8 adaptation pulls from the comic series of the same name by Rob Liefeld. The original script for the upcoming film was penned by Marc Guggenheim.
Prophet will star Jake Gyllenhaal as John Prophet, a man who is injected with a super-solider serum near the end of World War II and gets trapped and buried alive during a bombing. He emerges 2o years later to a daughter that resents him and KGB agents who want to use him to make super soldiers of their own. Kurt Johnstad is no stranger to adapting comics, as he’s best known for writing the Zach Synder 300 adaptation, so this seems like a good fit.
Jake Gyllenhaal is no stranger to comic book movies either, playing the villain Mysterio in Marvel’s Spider-Man: Far From Home back in 2019. Gyllenhaal’s next role will also be under the Disney umbrella when he leads their animated film Strange World. In Strange World, Gyllenhaal will be voicing a member of the legendary family of explorers known as the Clades, alongside a cast that also includes Dennis Quaid, Jaboukie Young-White, Gabrielle Union, Alan Tudyk, and Lucy Liu.
We should be getting Strange World before the end of the year, as it’s set for a November 23, 2022 release. In the meantime, you can catch Jake Gyllenhaal in his most recent live-action role in Michael Bay’s Ambulance, which is now streaming on Amazon Prime. Ambulance starred Jake Gyllenhaal and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as two robbers whose heist goes off the rails when they steal an ambulance.
As for when we can expect to see Jake Gyllenhaal in a live-action role next, it seems likely that The Interpreter will be coming out in early 2023. The Guy Ritchie-directed The Interpreter stars Gyllenhaal as Sgt. John Kinley, who is saved by an interpreter named Ahmed after they’re ambushed on a survey mission. When Kinley finds out Ahmed was denied entry to the US, Kinley returns to the war zone to save his rescuer.
In addition to his comic book adaptation Prophet, Jake Gyllenhaal also has a big video game adaptation on his schedule. Gyllenhaal will be co-starring opposite Jessica Chastain in an adaptation of The Division, which follows a group of civilians activated to evacuate New York after a deadly pandemic devastates the city. Rawson Marshall Thurber is directing the adaptation with a script by Rafe Judkins.
There’s no word yet on when we can expect to see Jake Gyllenhaal in the Prophet adaptation, but with the movie in the pre-production phase there’s bound to be more news as filming gets underway. The most recent adaptation of a Rob Liefeld character was Ryan Reynold’s Deadpool movies, so if Prophet manages to reach that level of quality and success Jake Gyllenhaal could have a franchise on his hands. For now, we’ll have to wait and see.
