Jack Black’s Best Movie Getting An Unexpected Sequel?
Some feature films wait a long time for a sequel before they finally get one. James Cameron’s Avatar waited 13 years for its long-awaited second film and recently sequel to Reese Witherspoon’s 1999 classic comedy, Election, was announced to begin production soon. Now, ScreenRant reports that rumors have it that the classic Christmas movie, The Holiday, starring Jack Black, might get a sequel in The Holiday 2.
If the rumors that Jack Black is starring in The Holiday 2 come as a surprise, it’s understandable. The Holiday was released in 2006, so a sequel being released now would come more than 16 years after the original film concluded. Though it’s unusual for a film to get a sequel so long after the original movie wrapped up the story, it’s not entirely unheard of, as we’re currently witnessing with the announced Tracy Flick Can’t Win sequel to Election coming 23 years after the original film was completed.
The Holiday was written, directed, and produced by Nancy Myers and starred Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz as depressed and unlucky-in-love women who swap homes in order to take a break from their own lives. Jack Black and Jude Law play the two women’s love interests in the cute and heartwarming romantic comedy. According to the rumors that were originally published by the UK tabloid, The Sun, all of the original cast, including Jack Black, would be back for The Holiday 2.
Over the past decade and a half, The Holiday has become a Christmas movie classic and was a major financial success for Columbia and Universal Pictures as it earned the studios $200 million with only an $85 million budget. So, naturally, fans of the film are excited to see where the story might go next. Unfortunately, audiences will not see Jack Black and company back in The Holiday 2 as Nancy Myers herself has debunked the rumors of the sequel.
In a tweet that referenced the sequel’s announcement, the writer, director, and producer of the original holiday film said that the rumors were not true. Myers also posted a statement to Instagram where she said she had seen the rumors online but that no one from the studio had talked to her about a potential sequel. According to Myers, the suggestion for another film following the original has never even come up.
For those who were excited about the potential of seeing Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, and Jack Black in The Holiday 2, the discovery that the rumor was fake news all along is a bummer, even though it makes sense that the sequel isn’t actually happening. The way that The Holiday ended completed the story with perfect happily-ever-afters for all of its characters, which means that making a sequel could jeopardize the sweetness of the original story. A sequel would have to take the completed character arcs in a brand new direction without compromising the development that we’ve already seen from the original.
Though Jack Black won’t actually be appearing in The Holiday 2, he will be in the highly anticipated The Super Mario Bros. Movie, in which he voices the classic video game villain, Bowser.
