This article is more than 2 years old
Time has been kind to actor and comedian Matt Berry, who was once primarily known for his work in Britain on the popular television series The IT Crowd. Since his days in British television, Berry hit worldwide fame by starring in the FX series What We Do in the Shadows, a television spinoff of the independent film of the same name by Taika Waititi. Now, it seems as though Matt Berry’s name is trending on Twitter and other social media platforms because of demands fans of The Great British Bake Off have made for him to replace current host Matt Lucas on the baking show.
Longtime co-host Matt Lucas recently announced that he will no longer be part of The Great British Bake Off, according to a report by Eater, and the internet has decided that Matt Berry might be a good fit to take Lucas’ place on the reality competition show. Another host of the series, Noel Fielding, has appeared on the show since 2017 and has been a frequent collaborator of Berry’s since their days on The IT Crowd. Among other things, they including worked together on the British comedy series The Mighty Boosh.
Since the two have been paired in the past on successful projects, fans are admittedly smitten over the idea that Matt Berry and Noel Fielding could possibly be paired up again on The Great British Bake Off.
So far, it doesn’t seem that Matt Berry has responded to his name being thrown out into the internet for fans of The Great British Bake Off to believe he should replace Matt Lucas. Nevertheless, that hasn’t stopped Twitter users from perpetuating the rumors. The baking show has seen renewed interest in recent years after old episodes were added to Netflix, and the show was retitled The Great British Baking Show in some countries like the United States and Canada.
As for actor Matt Berry, he seems to be doing just fine in his professional and personal life, as he was recently spotted in Toronto joining the virtual band Gorillaz for a special performance. Always the funny man, Berry was asked by the English band to recite a unique passage during one of their hits; a section of the band’s tour that was once performed by actor Dennis Hopper before he passed away in 2010. The band had not included this passage as part of their tours since the Easy Rider star’s death, but started incorporating it back into their material starting in 2020.
One Twitter user in particular remarked that Noel Fielding might also be retiring from his hosting duties on The Great British Bake Off, which would leave fans wondering how could replace the longtime host as well. If this were to happen, they tweeted then Matt Berry should join the show alongside his What We Do in the Shadows co-star Natasia Demetriou, who plays vampire Nadja of Antipaxos in the series.
