Iron Man Spinoff Series Begins Production
It looks like the Iron Man spinoff Ironheart got some pretty amazing news with word that production has begun on the Disney+ series.

We seem to be in the torch-passing phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a time of transition for sure with some legacy characters having wrapped (or wrapping) up their arcs and a whole host of new folk coming on to the scene. It’s been exciting, if a little hectic, with all kinds of new stories to explore. One of those is going to be the Ironheart series which will act as something of an Iron Man spinoff in this universe. Though not a 1:1 move from Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark to this new character, we will definitely see how they overlap when it finally hits the air, streaming on Disney+. And along those lines, we got a pretty exciting update about the show’s timeline.
Posting over on Twitter (via CBR), the account @filming_chicago let on that Ironheart had begun some early shooting for the series, mostly what they are saying are test shots and B-roll footage in preparation for the real thing this summer. And while the major players aren’t on the ground yet (presumably), it does mean that things are ramping up where this character is concerned. That’s great news around what could be a very cool story in this universe, one that will kick off well in advance of the series even hitting the streamer. Check out what Filming In Chicago had to say on Twitter about Ironheart:
Ironheart will follow the character of Riri Williams, being played by Dominique Thorne (Judas and the Black Messiah). The Riri Williams character first came about back in 2016 with an origin story, not unlike Tony Stark’s Iron Man in that she builds her own suit, one to replicate what the billionaire had already put together. Originally, there was no real overlap between the two characters outside of inspiration seeing as how Williams uses her own genius to replicate what Stark had done already. Presumably, this new series will develop along the same lines considering Tony Stark is dead in this universe following the events of Avengers: End Game.
But Ironheart won’t be the first time we are introduced to Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams. That will come in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. While it’s unclear just how big a role she will have in that movie, it is assumed that when she is introduced she will have already created the Iron Man-like suit of armor for herself. Again, that’s speculation because the plot points of this movie have been kept pretty lock and key, but that’s the working assumption at this point. In this way, that movie will be the jumping-off point for the Ironheart series. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever hits theaters on November 11th of this year.
If production on Ironheart is indeed starting to ramp up now then there is some chance we see the series in the beginning of 2023 at the earliest. From a timing perspective, this would make some sense on the heels of Riri Williams’ first appearance in the MCU happening in late 2022. It’s a youth movement for Marvel right now, and this show is just another example of what’s to come for the future of the franchise.
