Invincible Season 2 Expanding Story Beyond Expectations

Invincible Season 2

Invincible creator Robert Kirkman says fans can expect season 2 of the animated series to be much bigger than its predecessor. “I think Invincible season one is a clear representation of what you’re going to get from this show, but overall season 2 is going to feel much bigger than season one,” he said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

“The overarching story of Invincible that’ll continue from season [one] to season [two] is about the growth and change that Mark goes through as he moves from a teenager into adulthood and possibly even into old age. So in season two, we’ll see him maturing and growing up a little bit,” Kirkman told the publication.

Kirkman added that Omni-Man’s absence will be a concern for the people of Earth. Not only did he become a menace at the end of season one, but he also revealed the danger posed by the Viltrumites. This looming threat will become a central focus in Invincible season 2 , and with Omni-Man no longer there to protect Earth, it creates an unsettling and prolonged sense of fear throughout the series.

The first season of Invincible also introduced viewers to The Coalition of Planets, an interstellar organization formed to thwart the threat posed by the Viltrumite Empire. Among its confirmed representatives is Allen the Alien, voiced by executive producer Seth Rogen. It was Allen who told Mark about the true nature of the Viltrumites.

Kirkman hinted that The Coalition of Planets will expand the horizons of the Invincible season 2significantly. “Season two overall represents an opening of the universe, an expansion of the universe,” he said. He added that season one dropped subtle hints about some events that viewers will get to witness firsthand in the next installment.

Invincible Season 2 will also introduce fans to several new heroes and villains. Among them is Sterling K. Brown’s character, Angstrom Levy, described as a brilliant but unhinged individual who can travel between different dimensions. According to Kirkman, Angstrom Levy is poised to become one of the central antagonists in the upcoming season.

“It’s a villain that if [Invincible] were able to use his strength, could defeat very easily,” Kirkman explained about Invincible season 2. “He’s gonna have to try to outsmart him instead of just beating him up. So it puts him in a position where everything he’s learned doesn’t really work for him so far,” he added.

The first season of Invincible debuted on Amazon Prime Video in March 2021, with a season 2 and 3 renewal announced before the finale. The show is based on the Image Comics series created by Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ryan Ottley. The story revolves around Mark Grayson, who, with the guidance of his father, Omni-Man, becomes the world’s most formidable superhero.

Still, Mark struggles to find a balance between his ordinary teenage life and the obligations that come with being a superhero. This predicament motivates him to prove his worth as a hero as he tries to live up to his father’s legacy. The series boasts a talented voice cast, with Steven Yeun, Sandra Oh, and J. K. Simmons lending their voices to the Grayson family.

Meanwhile, Spider-Man’s potential cameo in Invincible season 2 has been a topic of interest among fans in recent months. Clues hinting at a crossover were spotted in the season 2 trailer, which included a subtle reference to Marvel Team-Up #14, where both superheroes share the spotlight. While Mark Grayson scrolls through his phone, a glimpse of the crossover comic book cover briefly appears.

Although this could merely be an inconspicuous Easter egg from Skybound, the production team behind Invincible seasons 1 and 2, fans have convinced themselves that the shot of Mark’s phone genuinely hints at Spider-Man’s arrival in the show. Further fueling speculation about the potential crossover is the addition of Josh Keaton to the cast in an undisclosed role.

Keaton has previously voiced Spider-Man/Peter Parker in various projects, such as The Spectacular Spider-Man, Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, and Spider-Man: Edge of Time. Although Keaton’s involvement doesn’t guarantee Spider-Man’s presence, it certainly adds an intriguing layer to the discussion. Invincible season 2 is set to premiere on November 3, 2023.
