Invincible Live-Action Movie Still In The Works?
The Invincible live-action movie is still being planned, but is delayed because of the ongoing strikes.
After the runaway success of The Boys, Amazon proved their skill at adapting comic books again with Invincible, a killer animated adaptation of Robert Kirkman’s hit comic book series. Previously, an Invincible live-action movie was announced, and Kirkman recently gave an interview to ScreenRant where he gave an important update on that film.
Robert Kirkland said an Invincible live-action movie is on pause but Universal is “invested in” making one
Specifically, he clarified that even though “everything’s been put on pause” due to the writers and actors striking, the movie is something “Universal is very invested in” and has been “been working on behind the scenes up to this point” to bring this film to life.
Even as he was providing the answer, Kirkman seemed regretful that he couldn’t provide a more concrete answer to this question about the Invincible live-action movie.
“Hopefully, I’ll be able to answer this question in a more answerable way at some point in the future,” he said. And this is certainly understandable, especially since he has no way of knowing when the strikes are going to be resolved.
While we have no way of knowing exactly how far along Universal was with the development of the Invincible live-action movie, it’s reasonable to assume the movie was more in the early planning stages.
If Universal had made any big decisions, including who would be writing the film and who would be starring in it, we likely would have heard about it before now. Furthermore, with the ongoing strikes, Universal can’t negotiate with either writers or actors, and this may threaten to further stall a project that sounds like it was already going a bit slow.
Strikes Are Causing Hollywood Delays
To better understand why Robert Kirkman can’t give more exact details about the Invincible live-action movie, you need to know that many superhero movies much further along in development have been delayed significantly by the strike. This includes Kraven the Hunter getting pushed from October of this year to August of next year.
And the third Spiderverse movie, which is currently the most-anticipated of all the superhero films, no longer has any release date at all because Sony doesn’t have any idea when they’ll be able to get back to working on that ambitious final adventure of Miles Morales.
Numerous other superhero movies are facing delays thanks to the strikes
Therefore, if movies that were already cast and at least partially written are experiencing major delays due to the strikes, something like the Invincible live-action movie, which sounds like it was more in the tentative planning stages, will experience an even greater delay.
However, Kirkman is quick to point out that he supports the strike, even if it does mean delaying the live-action film he’s been working on. “Everybody’s doing a great thing trying to make sure that future generations get to be able to work and thrive and survive in this industry,” he said during the interview.
And it’s possible that the delays facing the Invincible live-action movie could help it eventually have a more successful release date. Recent superhero movies have been a disappointment at the box office, including Quantumania and The Flash. One of the reasons typically given for the poor financial performance of these films is that the public has major superhero fatigue. If that’s true, then this movie finally coming back after the strike makes the public hungry for superhero media again could help this film become the hit Kirkman and fans really want it to be.
