The Avengers Box Office Defeated by Disney Sequel Smash Hit

Beating out the previous record holder, Frozen, Inside Out 2 became the top-grossing animated feature of all time at the box office in July within a month of its opening on June 12. The speed with which the sequel to Inside Out surpassed its competitors is scorching, as it continues into this weekend’s show dates. If the momentum continues, Inside Out 2 is poised to break $1.525 billion easily within the next few days.

Hitting the one billion mark just 19 days into its run, Inside Out 2 broke the record for the fastest to gross one billion at the box office for an animated feature, too. The runaway success of the animated feature has smashed summer box office records, winning the title of the highest-grossing film of 2024 so far.

As the opening weekend of the film is upon us in Japan, the staggering success of this feature shows no signs of slowing.

The wildly popular animated sequel, Inside Out 2, broke box office records in South America, where it has had meteoric success. In Mexico, the smash hit became the highest-grossing movie ever, hitting $100 million within weeks of its release and surpassing the previous record holder, The Super Mario Bros. Movie. It has also become Brazil’s highest-grossing movie ever, taking in $77.3 million so far. 

With Japan’s opening numbers yet to be released, the outlook is promising, with South Korea taking in $58.2 million at the box office so far. The success of Inside Out 2 in South Korea is an auspicious sign for box office success in Japan, as the markets have some significant similarities.

With international box office totals yet to be announced, Inside Out 2 has the potential to continue breaking box office records this month.

Inside Out 2 has broad box office appeal and characters that make a lasting impression, That’s been a big win for Disney at the box office, too.

Directed by Kelsey Mann, Inside Out 2 became the most popular–and highest grossing– Pixar movie of all time internationally at the beginning of July.

The film beat Pixar’s former top-grossing movie, Incredibles 2 in early July on its way to the top animated feature of all time slot.

With its all-star cast, led by Amy Poehler, Inside Out 2 has surpassed its original feature, Inside Out, at the box office by $665.1 million, grossing $1.524 billion so far. Drawing on a nostalgic audience of teens who remember the first Inside Out and a new audience of families with young kids, Inside Out 2 has expanded the franchise’s audience by successfully playing to multiple demographics.

Pixar owes at least some of its meteoric success with the new Inside Out to the loyal fan base it built with the first film, released in 2015.
