Idris Elba Headlines Over-The-Top The Suicide Squad Trailer

The new trailer for The Suicide Squad shows us a different side to this movie than the red-band trailer we saw previously, and oh boy, is it awesome. While the poster for the movie has Idris Elba up top, taking up space, and looking awesome, he was one of many players in the red-band trailer that first got us excited for this movie. We didn’t get to learn much about his backstory. In today’s new early access trailer, we meet a lot more characters, but we also focus on Bloodsport.

We first meet Idris Elba in prison. He’s quiet. He’s serving his time. Bloodsport is hardly looking like a masterful supervillain needed by the United States government for an important mission, and yet, that’s who he is.
As per usual, Viola Davis is perfect. She plays Amanda Waller and in this trailer, we see Bloodsport threaten to kill her after she threatens his daughter. She yells at the soldiers with guns to stand down. Then she switches modes to explaining herself to Idris Elba with calm and authority, telling him that she understands the gravity of what she is doing. She says, “I wouldn’t take such extreme measures if this mission weren’t more important than you could possibly imagine.” And so it is that we are led into the journey Bloodsport is about to take, meeting all the characters he’s about to join up with. One of the great things about Idris Elba here is that he is calm, put together, and more of a relatable character. The juxtaposition to how weird this trailer is about to get is just perfect.
And weird, it certainly is. Idris Elba is in store for a lot with this group of oddballs. Over the top is a perfect description. Previous looks at this movie have tried to make clear that this movie is going to be extremely weird, but this one leans in. Let’s not miss the part where Margot Robbie is floating with a bunch of rats. Are they swimming? Are the rats wearing little vests? Some of them appear to be dressed in vests that match Margot Robbie’s dress. Should we assume that’s Harley Quinn’s doing? Did she dress up a bunch of rats and then go swimming with them?
This trailer gives us a better look at Idris Elba, but also a wider look at just how many characters are in this film. The trailer is brief, but it could be watched several times with new details noticed during every watch-through. It seems like they are showing us so much, in fast flashes, that the movie won’t have anything surprising left for us. However, this is director James Gunn, and apparently, he didn’t hold back when he came over to DC from Marvel. Who knows what we can expect. It seems like Idris Elba is going to be used as a good grounding character in this story, though. He may even have a little love story happening on the side, if that brief exchange on the bus is anything to go by.
We don’t have terribly long to wait to see Idris Elba in this movie now. The Suicide Squad releases in theaters on August 6, 2021.
