Idris Elba has been in hit after hit. He’s become popular in movies like The Suicide Squad and as the villain in Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw. Another popular project he was in was BBC’s Luther. The popular drama series saw him star as Detective Chief Inspector John Luther. Now, it looks like Idris Elba is getting ready to jump into that world once again.
On Twitter, the movie star posted two pictures teasing his Luther return. The first is of a clapper marked Luther and the other of Luther’s iconic outfit.
It was announced a few months ago that the Luther series is getting a feature film that will release on Netflix. Other details reveal that actors Andy Serkis and Cynthia Erivo joined the cast. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Erivo will play a detective while Andy Serkis is the film’s villain. Details about the production side of the film were also released. The creator of the show, Neil Cross, is writing the movie. And Idris Elba will be doing more than just starring in the movie. He’s going to be producing it as well.
The film comes after 20 episodes of Luther aired on BBC. The series followed the titular character as he investigates and tries to catch murderers. However, he struggles not to let his work consume his life. The show first premiered in 2010, and its last episode was released in 2019. It is yet to be seen if this Netflix film will be the last chapter in the Luther saga. It wouldn’t be the first show to receive its farewell on the streaming service.
Recently, the TV show Manifest was canceled by NBC. However, Netflix picked it up and will allow it to have its final season on the platform. Even if it’s not the final entry, it’s no surprise why Netflix decided to pick it up. The Idris Elba show was wildly popular when it aired. According to The Independent, the last episode of the show had 4.6 million viewers.
On top of that, the show was showered with awards and nominations. In 2016, Luther was nominated for three Emmy awards. Idris Elba in particular was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie. Although the show didn’t get any wins, to get nominated is a huge honor. The show has no release date yet but could make its debut in late 2022.
Fans of Idris Elba have a lot to look forward to these days. The Luther project has him bringing back a character that’s been dear to him. He’s shared in the past that he’s looking to get a more feature film feel for this project and that the tone for the movie will more closely mirror James Bond. Recently, he shared a social media post with Will Smith, hinting that the pair may sign up for more DC projects soon. A Deadshot and Bloodsport movie may not be too far off in his future. But first, Luther.
