Idris Elba Is Out Of London In First Look At Luther
Idris Elba is bringing Detective Luther out of the streets of London into the snowy wilderness in the first look for the Luther movie.
From the moment Idris Elba appeared on screen in 2010 as Detective Inspector John Luther, he owned the screen with a brilliant and flawed aura. The enigmatic investigator showcased the Marvel Cinematic Universe actor for six seasons and a new upcoming film, bringing the British talent to renown before he became Thor’s all-seeing guardian. In an Empire Magazine feature, the actor returns to the troubled detective with a similar ambiance, only free from the grey confines of London in a snowy landscape.
Now that the series is moving from the small screen to the big screen, there is a jump in the budget for the production team, which Idris Elba assured Luther fans didn’t take away from the quality. He tells Empire that he and the writers got to peel the onion away and get to the core of the character because they got the time and scale to be able to do that. The lead commented that moving to the big screen gave Neil Cross the time and budget to take DCI Luther out of his usual stomping ground and put him in new places without losing the feel of the series fans love.
Neil Cross is the bestselling author of several novels, including Always the Sun, Burial, and Captured, and his bestselling memoir Heartland was shortlisted for the PEN/Ackerley Prize in 2006. He is best known for his creation and writing for Idris Elba’s Luther but is also known for his other screen work, including the TV series MI-5, Dr. Who, Crossbones, and The Mosquito Coast. He isn’t entirely new to the feature film world as he wrote the international sensation Mama and has also been tapped to write the upcoming reboot of Escape From New York.
Idris Elba has enjoyed an incredibly successful career since his debut as Luther in 2010. While he had a long filmography before playing the troubled but brilliant DCI John Luther, he has gained even more renown in the last decade, partly due to his portrayal of the detective and partly due to his exposure from his run in the Thor franchise. His earlier successes include Russell “Stringer” Bell in The Wire and Charles Minor in the American version of The Office, along with the films 28 Weeks Later, American Gangster, and The Losers.
Since gaining renown, he has landed roles in multiple big-budget films, including the villain in Nicolas Cage’s second outing as the flaming skulled biker in Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, the Alien prequel Prometheus, and Pacific Rim. He has also been in even bigger films as the villain in the Fast & Furious spin-off Hobbs and Shaw opposite Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham, and the lead in James Gunn’s installment into the DC Extended Universe, The Suicide Squad alongside Margot Robbie and John Cena.
While Idris Elba has had many bigger and more successful projects than Luther, it is hard to argue that the DCI is his most dynamic. He found a depth and emotional core to the character that was more intriguing than any storyline or criminal featured in the series. As the movie gets closer and closer, fans can get more and more excited as while the world gets bigger, the conflict will undoubtedly remain close to home.
