After taking home the title of People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive back in 2018, things have only continued to move upwards for Idris Elba. Unfortunately for fans of the actor’s physique and looks, they won’t be catching either in his newest project. Recently, Deadline announced that the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 star will be getting his own spinoff based on a storyline surrounding his animated character, Knuckles.
Following the major success of 2020’s Sonic the Hedgehog, it was a no-brainer for Paramount Pictures and Sega Corp to move forward with more feature-length films and other content based around the video game. The film crushed at the box office and rose through the ranks as the top-grossing video game adaptation of all time, domestically. Taking a note from the titular character, the film ran circles around its competition and soon brought in $320 million at the global box office.
Paramount quickly saw the dollar signs adding up and pushed forward the production on its sequel. Fans can expect to hear and see all of their favorites from the first film including Ben Schwartz as Sonic, Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Tails, James Marsden as Tom Wachowski, Jim Carrey as Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik, Tika Sumpter as Maddie Wachowski, Natasha Rothwell as Rachel, Adam Pally as Wade Whipple, Lee Majdoub as Agent Stone, with Tom Butler as Commander Walters and Elfina Luk as the Secretary of Homeland Security. Idris Elba will step out as the super-strong, red echidna Knuckles for the first time in the 2022 sequel. Like the cast of the original film, the follow-up also brings back many of its creative team members including director, Jeff Fowler, and co-writers, Pat Casey and Josh Miller.
As for the Knuckles spinoff series, Paramount and Sega plan to produce it alongside yet another movie, pulling the features together as a trilogy. As of right now, it sounds like the series will air on Paramount’s streaming service, Paramount+ at some point in 2023. Although we know the new show will feature the voice of Idris Elba, no other cast members have been revealed at this time.
In 2020’s Sonic the Hedgehog children and adults alike were drawn into the adventure and comedy-packed live-action flick that followed the life of the speedy hedgehog and his BFF, Sheriff Tom (James Marsden). Together, the two combine their forces to take on the wily villain, Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) before he’s able to follow through with his plans to take over the world. The second film will pick up after the events of the first with Sonic now relaxing in his new life in Green Hills. Things heat up when Dr. Robotnik comes back for seconds and this time brings along a new sidekick, Knuckles (Idris Elba).
Will Sonic be able to stop the evil doctor and his cunning teammate from finding an emerald that holds the power to bring civilization to its knees? We’ll find out in just a few weeks as the film is slated for a theatrical debut on April 8.
While we can’t wait to see how Idris Elba takes on the role of Knuckles and find out more about what’s in store for his character’s spinoff, we’re also just excited for the top-tier actor to be gracing our screens once again. Our only complaint is that we wish we’d be catching him as a half-human, half-echidna hybrid like he was for his role in Cats, a film that truly haunts our dreams to this day.
