Amazon has done an exceptional job building out their library of original offerings over the last couple of years with several high-profile projects that include spin-offs like Rings of Power, Reacher, and Jack Ryan, as well as acclaimed features such as The Tomorrow War and Manchester by the Sea. Now, according to MovieWeb, the streaming giant is developing a brand-new action flick called Heads of State, which will star John Cena and Idris Elba. The upcoming film marks the second collaboration between the two actors after both appeared in 2021’s The Suicide Squad.
Plot details for Heads of State are being kept under wraps for the time being, but the film is being described as Air Force One meets Midnight Run. The script for the film was originally scribed by Harris Query with revisions by Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec, the writers behind the upcoming Netflix sequel Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley. The characters John Cena and Idris Elba will portray in the forthcoming action feature have not been revealed.
The star power of John Cena and Idris Elba is already a major draw for the new Amazon flick, and filmmaker Ilya Naishuller is sure to attract interest to the project as well. Last year, the Russian-born director released the hit movie Nobody during the pandemic, which made an action star our of Better Caul Saul actor Bob Odenkirk. The mid-budget picture opened to number one in March 2021 and grossed nearly $58 million globally.
Peter Safran, who was recently appointed co-CEO and co-chair of DC Studios, which was previously known as DC Films, is producing the upcoming film with John Rickard of The Safran Company. Safran has produced a slew of pictures for Warner Bros. including Aquaman, Peacemaker, Shazam!, as well as several entries in The Conjuring Universe. John Cena and Idris Elba will serve as executive producers on the new Amazon film.
John Cena and Idris Elba had tremendous onscreen chemistry in The Suicide Squad. The former portrayed Peacemaker while the latter played Bloodsport in the James Gunn-directed movie. The scenes featuring exchanges between the two actors were some of the best in the film, and we are definitely hoping the two can recapture that magic for Heads of State.
Earlier this year, John Cena reprised his role from The Suicide Squad in the HBO Max series Peacemaker, which was a huge hit for the streamer, receiving rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. Just recently, a second season was announced to be in development. Additionally, Idris Elba is reportedly receiving his own spin-off series that will feature his character Bloodsport.
Heads of State is currently in the works at Amazon, with John Cena and Idris Elba being the only cast members announced at this time. Although no release date has been set for the project just yet, it looks like the film is a high priority for the streamer. Considering the stage of development the movie’s currently in, a 2024 premiere seems likely.
