Idris Elba And Andy Serkis Have Epic Showdown In Luther: The Fallen Sun Trailer
Idris Elba is back as Luther in the new trailer for Luther: The Fallen Sun, where he battles a maniacal Andy Serkis.
Idris Elba is back in one of his most beloved roles as the titular detective in the action-packed trailer for the feature-length film, Luther: The Fallen Sun. The trailer, which you can see below, picks up with our favorite ex-copper almost four years after the hit television series took its final bow. In a film that will release to Netflix on March 10 following a limited theatrical engagement on February 24, Luther is back and on a race against time to stop a sadistic killer (Andy Serkis) from setting the world on fire.
The trailer opens with a cheeky conversation between a new-to-the-franchise character played by Cynthia Erivo (Harriet) and returning cast member Dermot Crowley (Falling for a Dancer), who plays Luther’s former boss, DSU Martin Schenk. She’s there to alert Schenk that while he’s meant to be serving out a prison sentence, Idris Elba’s disgraced cop Luther has broken free of his confines and is on the run. Of course, the trailer doesn’t leave even a moment to the imagination, showing off Luther’s big jail breakout during an action-packed prison riot.
Immediately picking up where he left off, Luther heads back to the streets in an attempt to stop a maniacal cyber-centered psychopath (Andy Serkis) who’s laying waste to London and leaving a slew of bodies in his wake. While he may be hot on the trail of the killer, Luther will need to watch his back as he’s a wanted man by the country that he’s attempting to protect. Along with Idris Elba, Andy Serkis, Dermot Crowley, and Cynthia Erivo, Luther: The Fallen Sun will also feature Jess Liaudin, Lauryn Ajufo, Natasha Patel, and Henry Hereford.
BBC Studios was the home of the hit series Luther during its critically acclaimed five-series run from 2010 – 2019. For Idris Elba’s portrayal of the down-and-dirty detective, John Luther, the actor nabbed a Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild, and Critics’ Choice Television Award. The celebrated performer would also be nominated four times by the Primetime Emmy Awards for his work, with the series also receiving eleven Emmys nominations.
Although fans have sorely missed and wished for more installations to come for the television series, we can’t always get what we want, but Netflix decided to give us something we didn’t even know that we needed – a film. Along with bringing back leading stars Idris Elba and Dermot Crowley, Luther: The Fallen Sun was also penned by franchise creator Neil Cross who also wrote the series. With this in mind, the Luther fandom can expect a similar tone and pace as what they came to love from the original series.
While this may be Idris Elba’s first feature-length reprisal of John Luther, it may not be his last as the movie is already picking up a lot of chatter prior to its release. If viewership soars, there’s a great chance that Netflix will see dollar signs and move forward with more installments of the fan-favorite project. You can check out the butt-kicking trailer for Luther: The Fallen Sun above and catch it for a short time on the big screen at select cinemas on February 24 or from the comfort of your own home via Netflix on March 10.
