The Best ’90s Teen Slasher Getting Another Reboot
If you’re nostalgic for 90s summer slasher flicks, then Sony Pictures has you covered next year. The studio is working on putting together a star-studded cast for its reboot of I Know What You Did Last Summer, which is set to come out July 18, 2025.
I Know What You Did Last Summer Reboot
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Madelyn Cline, Camila Mendes, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, and Jonah Hauer-King are all in talks to join the ensemble for the film.
The I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot already has Jennifer Kaytin Robinson on board as director.
Robinson also co-wrote the screenplay with Sam Lansky from an initial script from Leah McKendrick. Neal Moritz, who was a producer on the original film, is also on board to produce this one.
Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. Returning?
Along with the new young cast members, the I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot is looking to build some casting continuity, as Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. are also both in talks to reprise their roles.
Love Hewitt and Prinze Jr previously reprised their roles in the sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, in 1998. The most recent film in the franchise was the direct-to-video I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer, which didn’t feature the original cast members and came out in 2006.
The Original I Know What You Did Last Summer
The first I Know What You Did Last Summer starred Hewitt, Prinze, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Ryan Phillippe and followed a group of friends who cover up a car accident where they believe they accidentally killed someone.
A year later, they start getting stalked by a hook-handed killer. The film was a hit, with $72 million at the box office against a $17 million budget.
Fresh Faces A Good Thing?
While I Know What You Did Last Summer isn’t quite as beloved as slashers like Scream, which was also penned by Kevin Williamson, it has remained popular over the years and certainly has its place in slasher history.
A cast of new faces with some references to the original could be the shot in the arm the franchise needs to start back up again. Plenty of reboots of 80s and 90s films have found success recently, so it’s possible this film could do the same.
Madelyn Cline And Others
I Know What You Did Last Summer also has some recognizable talent on board to help bring in new audiences that aren’t familiar with the original. Camila Mendes is best known for her role in Riverdale while Madelyn Cline’s breakout role was in the Netflix series Outer Banks. Both series have been massively successful.
Meanwhile, Sarah Pidgeon was nominated at the Tony’s for her performance in Broadway hit Stereophonic.
Tyriq Withers is best known for the FX series Atlanta while Jonah Hauer-King recently played Prince Eric in the live-action The Little Mermaid for Disney.
It seems like Sony has a solid cast lineup for the I Know What You Did Last Summer remake, especially if the OG cast members are on board.
Amazon Had A Failed Reboot
The I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise had a TV series on Amazon in 2021 that failed to make waves. But it’s probably safe to say fans of the franchise would be more willing to go to theaters for a slasher-length film rather than a full-on TV series. We’ll have to wait and see when the film reboot hits theaters next summer.
