Netflix Dark Crime Comedy Turns Vigilante Justice Into Horror

I don't feel at home in this world anymore

There aren’t a ton of films that balance hyperviolence and comedy, but the few that do it well are always worth the watch. That’s what you get with the film I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore, which is now streaming on Netflix. The movie is a quick hour-and-a-half watch and makes for a perfect weekend movie if you’re looking for something a little different.

I don't feel at home in this world anymore

I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore follows a depressed woman whose home is robbed, leading her to team up with her annoying neighbor to track down the burglars. However, they find themselves in a situation that’s more than they bargained for when they have to go up against a group of dangerous criminals.

The film also has a great cast that includes Melanie Lynskey, Elijah Wood, David Yow, Jane Levy, Devon Graye, Christine Woods, Robert Longstreet, Gary Anthony Williams, Lee Eddy, Derek Mears, Jason Manuel Olazabal, Maxwell Hamilton, Matt Orduna, Michelle Moreno, and Jeb Berrier.

Things Get Bloody

I don't feel at home in this world anymore

I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore is directed and written by Macon Blair, who made his directorial debut with this film. It’s a great directorial debut too, deftly combining several different genres like neo-noir, comedy, and thriller.

Be warned if you’re a bit squeamish, as the film does ramp up the violence as it goes on, so it’s probably not one to watch with the whole family.

A Critical Darling

I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore never got a chance to hit theaters, as it went from Sundance Film Festival to Netflix. So, it’s actually been available to check out on Netflix for quite some time, but it definitely deserves some more eyes on it.

The film got almost universal praise from both critics and audiences, with a current 89 percent on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and 77 percent from audiences.

A Great Mix Of Comedy, Drama, And Violence

The critics on Rotten Tomatoes for I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore praise the film’s laugh-out-loud comedy, the edge-of-your-seat story, and the extreme violence on display. It also gets praise for the deep themes beneath the surface of what could have just been a by-the-books thriller. Of course, the cast also gets great reviews for their performances.

Stream It Now

I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore was an incredible directorial debut for Macon Blair, which made people extremely excited for his follow-up feature, a Toxic Avenger reboot.

Unfortunately, that film has only premiered to lucky people at film festivals and has yet to receive a wide release. But, if you like I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore it’s worth checking out some of his previous efforts outside of the director’s chair.

Namely, Blair wrote the film Hold the Dark, which came out a year later and adapts William Giraldi’s novel of the same name. Hopefully, Blair’s Toxic Avenger will also make its way to our screens sooner rather than later. In the meantime, you can stream I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore over on Netflix now.
