Hulu Sci-Fi Action Classic Is The Best Blockbuster Sequel
It’s been just a little over one month since the latest installment in the Alien franchise, Alien: Romulus, burst onto screens, reinvigorating the fandom’s love for the sci-fi thrillers. While Romulus is terrific and Ridley Scott’s original movie, 1979’s Alien, is also magnificent, many, including the critics at Rotten Tomatoes are in agreement that another title is the best in the series, hitting it with a 94 percent critics’ score. You can now see that movie for yourself as James Cameron’s Aliens is currently streaming on Hulu.
Ripley Returns In Aliens
Set following the harrowing and downright traumatizing events that she faced in the original film, the sequel centers yet again on Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley. Although incredibly hesitant at first, Ripley eventually agrees to join a team of Colonial Marines on a mission to the site of the gruesome happenings from the first movie to investigate what happened and what went wrong. As one could guess – nothing goes right for the military party, but to find out the rest, we suggest you check out Aliens on Hulu.
The Cast
Due to the events of the last movie that saw everyone aside from Ripley and our favorite sci-fi cat, Jonesy, survive, Sigourney Weaver was the only star to return for the sequel. Filling out the cast of Aliens is a lineup that includes Michael Biehn (The Terminator), Paul Reiser (Beverly Hills Cop franchise), Bill Paxton (Titanic), Lance Henriksen (Hard Target), and Carrie Henn.
Aliens is one of James Cameron’s many movies on Hulu alongside other classic titles like the Ed Harris-led sci-fi flick, The Abyss, and the Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis-fronted action comedy, True Lies.
Franchise Movie Rankings
As mentioned, on Rotten Tomatoes, Aliens has the highest rating out of the entire franchise, giving Hulu subscribers all the more reason to check it out on the streamer while it’s there. Behind it in second place with a 93 percent critics’ approval rating is the classic that started it all – Alien – with Fede Álvarez’s recently released Alien: Romulus following behind, earning a Certified Fresh rating of 80 percent.
Many fans would likely be in agreement that the franchise went downhill from James Cameron’s addition, with movies like David Fincher’s Alien 3 and Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Alien: Resurrection not hitting the target set by the movies that came before them.
James Cameron’s Best Decade?
Speaking of James Cameron, his dip into the legendary sci-fi film series came during one of the filmmaker’s most successful decades. Along with Aliens and The Abyss, which again are both available on Hulu, the critically acclaimed helmer also spent the ‘80s delivering audiences hits like his feature-length debut, Piranha II: The Spawning and The Terminator. Considering that Aliens was the filmmaker’s third movie on his own as a director, it’s pretty astonishing to think about the success that he had already reached at that point.
Streaming On Hulu
Against a budget of $18.5 million, the hard-hitting, action-packed sequel raked in the gargantuan sum of $131.1-183.3 million at the global box office, marking yet another hit for 20th Century Fox. Beyond the box office, the film’s stars also garnered massive amounts of praise, with the most going to Sigourney Weaver who landed her first of three Academy Award nominations for Best Actress thanks to her work in the film.
