Hulu Inspiring Sports Series Gives Beloved Comedy Star His First Emmy
By now, you’re probably aware of the FX original series Welcome To Wrexham on some level, as the viral marketing for the series can be quite aggressive. What you may not know, however, is that the show scored series co-creator and star Rob McElhenney his very first Emmy win after over a dozen seasons of failing to earn Academy support with his hit comedy, It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia. If you haven’t actually taken the time to sit down and watch full episodes of Welcome To Wrexham, however, you should definitely give the inspiring series a shot by streaming it on Hulu today.
Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds In Welcome To Wrexham
For those that don’t know, Welcome To Wrexham centers on Always Sunny‘s Rob McElhenney and Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds as they embark upon the seemingly quixotic mission to purchase and run a struggling Welsh soccer team. The team, Wrexham A.F.C., was formed as far back as the late 1800s, though it had fallen into a state of near disrepair by the time the Hollywood duo announced their intention to purchase a joint ownership stake back in 2020.
A Scheme That Proved To Be Effective
Apparently the previous management team behind Wrexham had been running the association into the ground throughout the entire 21st century, before ultimately laying off all players and staff indefinitely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
That’s when McElhenney and Reynolds stepped in with a hare-brained scheme to bring their patented blend of Hollywood cynicism and sarcastic wisecracks to the team. Against all odds, Welcome To Wrexham showcases this scheme in action, and proves that the duo are actually highly capable club owners who have not only gotten the team back in shape, but exceeded their previous glory with multiple league titles.
Laughing Their Way To Victory
In the third and most recent season of Welcome To Wrexham, the team are promoted back to their former status within the EFL League One, essentially restoring the Wrexham club to their previous glory years. The series has already been renewed for a fourth season amid a flurry of Emmy nominations and wins, including those for Outstanding Sound Mixing, Direction, and Cinematography.
The series is a surprisingly solid watch for fans of sports, unstructured comedy, or for those who enjoy seeing the two goofball owners prank each other along the way.
Ultimate Crossover Event In The Works?
Since Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have seen so much success with Welcome To Wrexham, the duo have begun to schedule numerous additional projects together, including ownership stakes in other sports franchises.
McElhenney is said to have shot a cameo appearance for Reynolds’ recently-released Deadpool & Wolverine film, though the appearance was ultimately cut for time.
Still, Always Sunny in Philadelphia fans are holding out hope that Ryan Reynolds will appear on future episodes of the FX original comedy, with some fans already cooking up genius comedic beats that the Deadpool actor could fulfill.
