Hulu Horror Comedy Series Is A Must-Binge Before Final Season

By Britta DeVore | Published

In 2014, comedic geniuses Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi dared to dream of a mockumentary film that would follow a group of immortal vampires forced to live in a house together. Incredibly popular with audiences, the movie, titled What We Do in the Shadows, would eventually spawn two spin-offs, with the second one stealing its name. Soon heading into its sixth and final season, subscribers can now watch the first five seasons on Hulu, giving audiences a chance to catch up before the vampires take their final bow in October.

Builds Off The Movie

what we do in the shadows

When it comes to Halloween-centered fare, What We Do in the Shadows is of a different variety than your typical vampire-centered production. The show follows the blueprint set out by the movie that came before it, giving it a mockumentary style that brings a strong helping of comedy to the undead’s nightly pursuits.

The show centers around what’s known as the Vampire Residence, an old home in Staten Island where roommates and vampires Nadja (Natasia Demetriou), Laszlo (Matt Berry), and Nandor (Kayvan Novak) live alongside energy vampire Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch) and Nandor’s familiar, Guillermo (Harvey Guillén).

What We Do in the Shadows not only sees the bloodsuckers engaging in their sinister rituals but also follows the mundane ins and outs of dealing with roommates, zoning ordinances, and jobs.

A Huge Hit With Critics And The Public

Over its five-season run, What We Do in the Shadows has become a favorite of audiences and critics alike, with the debut of the sixth and final season set for October 21. While we’re sad to see the vampires finally settle in for their eternal slumber, it’s always better that a beloved series like this one leaves audiences wanting more versus wishing they’d done less.

Throughout its run, the series hasn’t dipped below 94 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, with both Seasons 3 and 4 holding the perfect place of a 100 percent approval rating.

It Just Keeps Winning

When it comes to award nominations and wins, What We Do in the Shadows has it in the bag. The series has been nominated at the Emmys a whopping 29 times, with several of the nods specifically for the group’s dynamic as an Outstanding Comedy Series. Perhaps this will be the team’s year to nab that Outstanding Comedy Series trophy as they’re up for it again, along with nominations for Matt Berry for Outstanding Leading Actor in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series for Jake Bender and Zach Dunn’s work on the episode, “Pride Parade.”

An Unbelievable Run Of Guest Stars

As we look ahead to the final batch of episodes for What We Do in the Shadows, we can’t wait to see what awaits the roommates living at the Vampire Residence. We’re also looking forward to who might be dropping in for a recurring, guest, or even cameo role as in the past names like Tilda Swinton, Benedict Wong, Mark Hamill, Nick Kroll, Wesley Snipes, Doug Jones, and the late Paul Reubens have all stopped by in one capacity or another.

REVIEW SCORE

All in all, What We Do in the Shadows is a terrific way to get your Halloween celebrations underway without fully jumping into a slasher franchise right off the bat. The show is a fan-favorite for a reason, and I can almost guarantee that you’ll recognize why in the first episode, as Seasons 1-5 are now streaming on Hulu.
