Hulu Family Disaster Movie Is Just What You Need To Get Ready For Twisters
Something about disaster movies is fascinating to watch. While not many films beat the original Twister, Supercell is pretty close, especially with actual tornado footage to get the heart pumping. If you’re waiting for Twisters to reach a streaming service or come out on DVD, Supercell is a great film to hold you over until then.
Storm Chasing Runs In The Family
Supercell is a 2023 disaster film directed by Herbert James Winterstern (Siberia). The movie is about Quinn Brody (Anne Heche), a storm chaser who used to follow storms with her husband, Bill (Richard Gunn). During one particular storm, Quinn stays home with their son, William (Daniel Diemer), while Bill goes to chase a tornado.
Bill ends up dying, along with two college students, during the tornado. Years pass and Quinn and William live in Florida. Despite his mother’s best efforts, William is pulled to storms like his father.
Following In His Father’s Footsteps
When he gets a letter from one of his dad’s old storm-chasing partners, Roy (Skeet Ulrich), William decides to hitchhike to Ohio to talk to him and go on an adventure. Little does he know that this adventure might not only be his first but his last, as he tries to follow in his father’s footsteps. As the weather grows worse, there are money-hungry men in charge of the storm chaser tour.
Storm Footage Look Realistic For One Specific Reason
Many of the tornado scenes throughout Supercell are real. Winterstern was a storm chaser for several years and collected plenty of footage during that time. He also contacted another storm chaser, Pecos Hank, for extra film material.
One Of Anne Heche’s Final Outings
Supercell was one of the last projects for Anne Heche (Donnie Brasco). In December of 2022, Heche was in a series of accidents, one of which led her to crash through a building that then caught on fire. There, they determined her injuries were too severe and took her off life support.
Not A Critical Darling, But A Fan Favorite
Unfortunately, despite this rather cool footage, Supercell just couldn’t stand up to other natural disaster movies. Or at least, that’s what the critics say, with an average score of 50 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. However, standard audience members liked the movie much more, with an average score of 76 percent.
On IMDb, Supercell has a bit of a poorer score, with a 4.4 out of 10. While it may not be the highest-rated film, it does have all the suspense and drama you expect from a disaster movie, and the real tornado shots certainly don’t hurt.
Streaming Supercell On Hulu
Some fans said it couldn’t compare to the original Twister, but Supercell was still a rather good movie. The characters could have been done a bit better, with some fans claiming the characters were shallow and annoying. The main problem seems to be that it doesn’t have anything to make it stand out on its own, full of predictable moments and characters, and it falters when compared to the original tornado disaster movie.
It’s also a great film to watch if you’re waiting for a chance to watch the new Twisters, this is a good way to get yourself hyped. Supercell is available to stream on Hulu.
