Last week, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman set the internet ablaze with the announcement that the latter would return for one final outing as Wolverine in the hotly anticipated Deadpool 3, which will see the ‘Merc with a Mouth’ make his long-awaited MCU arrival. Now, a new rumor from Bounding Into Comics (via Twitter insider DanielRPK) suggests Jackman’s Wolverine will don his iconic yellow suit in the upcoming sequel, a revelation that has once again gotten Marvel fans completely riled up. There’s speculation that we’ll see a different version of Wolverine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe than the one featured in previous X-Men entries released under the 20th Century Fox banner.
Hugh Jackman has played the character of Logan/Wolverine for approximately 17 years across nine movies, yet he’s never appeared in the hero’s famous yellow suit. Fans did get a brief glimpse of the iconic outfit in a deleted clip from 2013’s The Wolverine after Logan received the costume as a gift, however, it was never used in future X-Men-related pictures. If fans have their way, Jackman will be rocking the bright yellow suit in every Deadpool 3 scene he’s featured in.
The news of Hugh Jackman appearing alongside Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool 3 was confirmed on September 27th courtesy of a hilarious promotional video that was posted to Jackman’s Instagram account, which is followed by over 30 million accounts. In the clip, Reynolds apologizes for missing D23 Expo 2022 and explains he’s been hard at work on the next Deadpool entry, even though he has been unable to come up with any fresh ideas for the third installment. Moments after Jackman appears in the background of the video, Reynolds pleads with the actor to return as Wolverine one last time to which he casually replies, “Yeah, sure Ryan.”
Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman both appeared as their respective characters in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which notoriously made a laughingstock out of Deadpool. In the character’s solo outings, the writers made countless jokes about that version of the antihero. In fact, during a hilarious montage during the end credits of Deadpool 2, the title character travels back in time and kills the first motion picture variation of Deadpool, effectively making it so he never existed.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine was one of lowest performing franchise entries in terms of box-office numbers, grossing a mere $373 million worldwide. In comparison, Deadpool, Deadpool 2, and Logan all grossed $600 million or more globally. The fact that all three of those movies were R-rated makes those massive figures all the more impressive.
Since the release of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds have become extremely good friends, often taking to their social media pages to make hysterical jabs at one another. Occasionally, the two have teamed up for videos and there’s no denying they have tremendous onscreen chemistry. Given the MCU’s successful track record over the years, we’re beyond excited to see the actors make their MCU debuts as their respective characters in Deadpool 3.
