Hugh Jackman Is Aiming To Make Marvel Movie History

By Doug Norrie | Published

For all that Marvel has accomplished over the years with their Cinematic Universe, there’s been one place in the movie industry the franchise has failed to gain any real traction. That would be among the major awards handed out each year for the best films or acting performances. But things might be set to change this year with word that Marvel will make a push for Hugh Jackman to land in and around awards circles when it’s all said and done. Could this actually happen for the MC, or is it just a marketing pipe dream?

Deadpool & Wolverine

The initial news about the Hugh Jackman awards push comes from Variety reporting Marvel and Disney will make a play for the Wolverine actor to get into the Best Supporting Actor mix at the Oscars.

In addition to Hugh Jackman’s consideration on that front, Ryan Reynolds could also maybe be part of the Golden Globes. They are submitting his name for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical category there.

Golden Globes A Lower Tier?

Because the Golden Globes are in a lower tier than the Academy Awards, having Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman head to the stage for Deadpool & Wolverine is a bit easier to picture.

The stakes are lower with the Golden Globes, and having a bit more fun with the proceedings has often been the name of the game.

It’s more of an industry award meant to highlight some of the bigger names without all that much swinging on the results.

Angela Bassett For Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

But the Academy Awards are a different animal entirely and Hugh Jackman could be the first to step up to the podium for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The only other person to even come close on that front was Angela Bassett for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever who received a Best Supporting Actress at the 95th Awards Show.

She didn’t take home the prize with Jamie Lee Curtis winning for her role in Everything Everywhere All At Once. She was the first and only actor or actress to receive any indiividual nomination in the 16-year MCU run.

Should Have Been Nominated For Logan?

This isn’t to say there were a lot of overlooked performances, mind you, but it always strikes me as funny when the biggest and most popular movies ever put on the big screen fail to get any Awards season mentions at all on the acting front.

From this standpoint, there’s always been (and maybe always will be) a clear disconnect between the fans and the Academy.

For his part, Hugh Jackman is excellent in Deadpool & Wolverine, an awesome return to the admantium claws.

Though, if Hugh Jackman were to have ever turned in his best Marvel performance, it might have been when he seemingly closed out the character in Logan. Alas, that one didn’t climb into consideration, though maybe it could have.

Winning The Award?

Will Hugh Jackman end up at the Academy Awards podium? Likely not. But we appreciate the effort and think more of these big-budget movies deserve consideration when awards season comes around. They are just too big and too popular to go “unnoticed.”
