Game of Thrones has an infamous history of on-screen errors that fans caught, and its prequel series, House of the Dragon, appears ready to carry on the tradition, only three episodes into the new show. An eagle-eyed viewer caught a special effects gaffe in Sunday’s episode, in which actor Paddy Considine is seen wearing a “green screen” glove that was supposed to be used to erase his character’s fingers. The moment has gone so viral so quickly, that even HBO has now responded.

In the third episode, titled “Second of His Name,” there is a scene in which King Viserys Targaryen (Considine) is seen talking to his daughter Rhaenyra (Milly Alcock). At one point, Viserys gives a sealed letter to one of his servants. When he hands the rolled letter off, two fingers on his left hand can be seen covered in a partial green glove. The green material is used by special effects artists to digitally “erase” the fingers, only someone forgot to do so before the episode went to air. Viserys damaged his fingers after a moment in the first episode, in which he cuts his pinky finger on a sharpened edge while sitting on the Iron Throne. The cut becomes infected, and despite the use of maggots to remove the dead flesh, by episode three, two of his fingers have been removed or severely damaged. Since Viserys usually wears gloves, the fingers are rarely an issue, but this moment managed to get past everyone on the production team.

HBO can hardly blame a time crunch for the error. According to Esquire, filming for House of the Dragon began in April of last year, in Cornwall, England. More likely, the shot was missed because the scene itself was so poorly lit, that the error wasn’t caught by anyone editing or reviewing it. Even viewers looking for it are likely to miss it. On Wednesday, HBO announced that the scene would be corrected by digital effects artists, according to Variety.

The incident likely reminded fans of gaffes in the original Game of Thrones, including an infamous moment in which a Starbucks cup can be clearly seen on a table in front of Daenerys Targaryen (played by Emilia Clarke). Clarke later said in an interview that actor Conleth Hill, who played Varys, confessed to her that it was his coffee cup. In yet another instance, in the series finale, a modern plastic water bottle is clearly visible sitting on the ground next to a chair. House of the Dragon seems to be continuing the tradition of hilarious mistakes caught by viewers.

Despite the gaffe, House of the Dragon has been an unqualified hit for HBO, becoming the most-watched series premiere in its storied history, surpassing even the Game of Thrones premiere in 2011. In addition to Considine and Alcock, the series stars Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen, Rhys Ifans as Ser Otto Hightower, Steve Toussaint as Lord Corlys Velaryon, and Graham McTavish as Ser Harrold Westerling. The series also stars Emmy D’Arcy as an older Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, as well as Olivia Cooke and Emily Carey as older and younger versions of Lady Alicent Hightower.
