Rebooted Horror Franchise Slashes Onto Netflix

By Britta DeVore | Published

After iconic filmmaker and horror aficionado Wes Craven passed away in 2015, fans of the beloved Scream franchise wondered if there would ever be another installment in the film series. A few years later, their prayers would be answered when it was announced that Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, known collaboratively as Radio Silence, would team up to direct a fifth production. Just in time for the spooky season, audiences will have a chance to catch Scream (2022) on Netflix when the movie arrives on October 11.

The Rebooted Scream Coming To Netflix

Blending the old with the new, Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett set out to give fans the comfort film that they deserved while also adding their own vision to the reboot. The success of this really depends on who you ask, which is another reason why, if you haven’t yet seen it, it’s worth giving Scream a stream when it arrives on Netflix next month. If we’re going by Rotten Tomatoes, the movie nailed a Certified Fresh approval rating of 76 percent from critics while audiences knocked it up to 82 percent.

Old And New Faces

Bringing the franchise to the next generation, the movie introduced audiences to estranged sisters, Sam (Melissa Barrera) and Tara Carpenter (Jenna Ortega), who find themselves as Ghostface’s latest targets.

The movie also featured some other younger up-and-coming stars like The BoysJack Quaid and Yellowjackets’ Jasmin Savoy Brown, while also mixing in legacy characters like Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott, David Arquette’s Dewey Riley, and Courteney Cox’s Gale Weathers. As those who watch Scream on Netflix will come to find out, no one is safe from Ghostface’s blade, no matter how famous you are.

A Box Office Success

Although it was likely hard for Paramount Pictures to gauge how audiences would respond to a Scream movie not helmed by Wes Craven, it was immediately clear that fans had been missing the campy whodunnit.

Against its $24 million budget, the movie made a staggering $138.9 million at the worldwide box office, solidifying the ordering of a sequel. And, although Scream fans won’t be able to watch the sixth installment on Netflix, should you finish the fifth and need the next chapter, Scream VI is now streaming on Paramount+.

The Rising Stars

Aside from the legacy characters who appeared in Scream, there were numerous standout performances from the movie’s younger cast, as Netflix subscribers will see. Most notably, both Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega were well on their way to stardom before the release of the movie but their careers took off like rocket fuel following Scream’s massive success.

Soon, Barrera will celebrate the arrival of a horror rom-com, Your Monster, while Ortega is still riding on the high of her appearance alongside another legendary cast in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

Scream 7 In The Works

Beyond watching Scream on Netflix and Scream VI on Paramount+, fans will be at a sort of dead end for the next chapter of the story as – although it’s progressing – Scream 7 hasn’t yet been released. As of right now, Barrera and Ortega will not be involved with the film, but we know that Campbell will once again reprise her role as Sidney Prescott.

Likewise, Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett are passing over the directorial reins to the man who created the franchise to begin with – Scream, Scream 2, and Scream 4 scribe, Kevin Williamson.

Get your Halloween season off to a solid start by streaming Scream when it arrives on Netflix on October 11.
