For fans of action roleplaying games, there may be no better title out there than Horizon Zero Dawn. Since 2017, the game has revolutionized video game developer Guerrilla Games’ inventory, while players can ward off mechanical creatures and other enemy forces using various skills and weaponry. A hit for Sony Interactive Entertainment and PlayStation, Horizon Zero Dawn has been talked about in terms of adapting the game to the screen, much like Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg were able to achieve with 2022’s Uncharted. Now, it appears that the game is going to be a series on Netflix, and it might have just found its perfect showrunner.
According to a report by Deadline, Horizon Zero Dawn will be coming to Netflix as a standalone television series, and Steve Blackman has signed on to be the showrunner. Blackman has reportedly signed an eight-figure deal with the streaming platform, which will see the writer and producer create content for many years to come. In addition to his proposed work on Horizon Zero Dawn, he will be producing and writing another series for Netflix entitled Orbital at the same time. Not much is known about Orbital at this time, but Collider is reporting that the show is an original thriller series that will take place aboard the International Space Station. No casting has been announced yet for either Orbital or Horizon Zero Dawn, as both series are still in the development stages.
For those unfamiliar with Blackman’s work, before he joins the adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn, he is the current showrunner for another popular Netflix series called The Umbrella Academy. The Umbrella Academy stars Elliot Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, and an ensemble cast that has run on Netflix for three seasons so far. According to TVLine, The Umbrella Academy has been renewed for a fourth season, although that will end up being the last for the series. It was developed by Jeremy Slater and created by Steve Blackman specifically for the subscription streaming service, adapted from the comic book series of the same name,.
Much like what Horizon Zero Dawn will most likely enjoy when it is developed for Netflix, The Umbrella Academy has been a striking success for showrunner Steve Blackman. Rotten Tomatoes currently ranks the series overall with an 86% on its Tomatometer of critics reviews and a 76% Average Audience Score. With numbers like those, it’s easy to see why critics and audiences would want to see more from Blackman. Prior to his work on The Umbrella Academy, Blackman was a well-known producer of the hit FX series Fargo, having been nominated as a producer for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Limited Series in 2014. His credits as a writer include Legion, Private Practice, Las Vegas, Bones, and NYPD Blue. As a producer, he worked on another Netflix series called Altered Carbon, which starred Chris Conner, Renée Elise Goldsberry, and Joel Kinnaman. Altered Carbon ran on the streamer for two seasons before its eventual cancellation in 2020.
