Does Hollywood Hate Henry Cavill?
Henry Cavill is one of the most beloved actors in Hollywood working today — at least by the fans. It seems to be a bit of a different story with the studios, as Cavill has exited or missed out on major franchises over and over again. So what’s the deal?
It could just be that Henry Cavill has exceedingly bad luck, but the actor’s troubles started with missing out on becoming the next James Bond despite being an obvious and fan-favorite pick. While the Bond producers have never officially indicated that Cavill was in the running for the role, he still has always seemed like the right pick to a lot of people. However, Cavill was never actually a part of the Bond franchise, so that missed opportunity doesn’t sting as badly as some of his recent Hollywood disappointments.
Unfortunately, the writing of the show didn’t nearly capture the magic of the games or books, so The Witcher situation may have been more of Cavill’s decision to leave.
Perhaps the one that took the most people by surprise was when Henry Cavill returned as Superman ever-so-briefly before being promptly removed from the role just weeks later.
Hype ramped up when Henry Cavill has a brief cameo during the post-credits sequence of Dwayne Johnson‘s Black Adam. Cavill, a noted comic book fan, seemed especially excited about getting the chance to reprise the role and bring more dimensions to the character. However, he was quickly axed due to the impending fresh start of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU.
While the Bond producers have never officially indicated that Cavill was in the running for the role, he still has always seemed like the right pick to a lot of people.
While many people are rightfully excited that DC is getting a fresh start in the film universe, it is regrettable that we never got to see Henry Cavill get a more hopeful and light-hearted Superman movie. If that wasn’t bad enough, Cavill would leave another franchise shortly after when Liam Hemsworth replaced him on Netflix’s The Witcher. We did get to see him play Geralt of Rivia one last time in the recent season of the show, but Hemsworth officially takes over next season.
Henry Cavill is a massive fan of The Witcher books and video games, and his love for the franchise showed in his portrayal of Geralt. Unfortunately, the writing of the show didn’t nearly capture the magic of the games or books, so The Witcher situation may have been more of Cavill’s decision to leave. So, it may be less that Hollywood hates Cavill and more that he just keeps getting paired with the wrong creative teams.
While Henry Cavill himself was perfectly cast as Superman and Geralt, the writing of these projects just didn’t perfectly capture the source material of the characters.
Warhammer 40,000
That seems to be the problem Cavill has been consistently facing and one that he’ll hopefully be able to overcome with his upcoming Warhammer 40,000 series that he’s doing with Amazon. Warhammer 40,000 is something that Cavill is a massive fan of and something that he has professed his love for more than perhaps any other IP.
Henry Cavill is starring in the Warhammer TV series, which is exciting enough. But, unlike his other projects where he loves the source material, he’s a producer on this series. With Cavill having creative control, perhaps the Warhammer series will finally be the perfect project that is faithful to the source material and gives Cavill a role he can truly dive into in the coming years.
