You might think there can only be one, but you’d be wrong because Highlander is getting another edition and this one is coming in 4K Ultra HD. It’s even better news for those who need a perfect holiday gift for the Highlander fan in their life because it’s coming out on December 13. According to Collider, the 4k release and Blu-ray release will be released for $22.99 and Best Buy will offer an exclusive Steelbook edition for $27.99.

Highlander is a classic epic from the 1980s that followed Christopher Lambert’s Connor MacLeod, a Scottish swordsman who can’t die. Another immortal, Juan Ramírez (Sean Connery), befriends MacLeod and teaches him about never-ending life. The immortals are eventually called to New York City to compete for the Prize and be the last one standing.

Highlander was directed by Russell Mulcahy with a screenplay co-written by Peter Bellwood and Larry Ferguson and a story by Gregory Widen. Along with Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery, the film stars Clancy Brown, Roxanne Hart, Alan North, Sheila Gish, Jon Polito, Hugh Quarshie, Christopher Malcolm, Peter Diamond, and more. Although it only brought in $12 million at the box office worldwide against a $19 million budget, it became a huge cult classic over the years.

Thanks to the interest in Highlander after the box office bomb, the franchise ended up getting a terrible sequel with Highlander II: The Quickening and an alternate sequel Highlander III: The Sorcerer that erased the canon established in the sequel. Highlander: Endgame and Highlander: The Source were released in the 2000s and followed Highlander: The Series. There was also an anime film called Highlander: The Search for Vengeance that was relatively well received by the fanbase.

Supposedly, there is also a Highlander remake on the way, but the pieces are moving slowly into place. The film rights were acquired by Summit Entertainment and Chad Stahleski (John Wick) was announced to be directing the film. In 2021, Henry Cavill was announced as the lead of the upcoming remake, adding to his ever-growing list of major franchise fantasy roles.

If you decide to pull the trigger on the upcoming 4k Ultra HD edition, you’ll get a lot more than just a better-looking version of the original. The edition will include various special features, including featurettes like The Immortal Attraction of Highlander, Looking back at four decades of Highlander magic, Capturing Immortality: Interview with photographer David James, A Kind of Magic: Music of The Immortals, and There can only be one Kurgan – Clancy Brown remembers Highlander. There will also be versions of the film that include audio commentary by Peter S. Davis, William N. Panzer, and Russell Mulcahy.

Those who go for the Blu-ray edition of Highlander will get features like an audio commentary by Mulcahy, The Making of Highlander featurette, deleted scenes, interviews with Christopher Lambert, and a trailer. With the potential upcoming Henry Cavill film on the way, now is the perfect time to catch up on the classic original. Don’t forget to check it out on December 13.
