Dope (2015)

Dope tells the coming-of-age story of Malcolm, a geeky African American kid who is skillfully trying to navigate life in his tough Inglewood, CA neighborhood. He is a senior in high school and has his sights set on attending Harvard.

So, while juggling preparing for the SATs and putting together his college applications, he must also deal with the local thugs and drug dealers. A random invite to an underground party leads Malcolm and his friends to more trouble (and fun) than they have ever seen.

Shameik Moore is Malcolm in a film that also stars Tony Revolori, Kiersey Clemons, Kimberly Elise, and A$AP Rocky.

Mixing old school with new, Stephanie takes the brunt of most of the jokes, but just might finally make it through senior year. Rebel Wilson stars in this fun high school movie.

Easy A (2010)

Emma Stone stars in Easy A, a high school movie comedy that has Stone playing Olive, a clean-cut girl where a little white lie (or two) she tells changes her entire high school existence.

In order to get out of a dreaded weekend camping excursion, Olive lies to her best friend. Then, when her best friend returns and presses Olive for details on her weekend, she fibs about losing her virginity to a college boy.

Her reputation goes from non-existent to tramp overnight. Instead of fighting it, Olive decides to cash in on her popularity by stitching a red A to all of her clothes, just like in the novel, The Scarlett Letter. It’s a high school comedy with many “ups and downs.”

The Breakfast Club (1985)

1980s movie high school

Probably the most classic of all the high school teen movies is the 1985 John Hughes comedy, The Breakfast Club. The hit movie stars Anthony Michael Hall, Emilio Estevez, Ally Sheedy, Molly Ringwald, and Judd Nelson as five teens from different high school cliques who meet one day during Saturday detention.

The film’s voice-over describes them as “a brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess, and a criminal.”

The five teens run the gambit of emotions and hijinks while dealing with their authoritative vice-principal Richard Vernon (the wonderful Paul Gleason), who is running the Saturday detention.
