See Henry Cavill’s Last Time As Geralt In The Witcher Season 3 Trailer
The Witcher Season 3 trailer has dropped, showing glimpses at Henry Cavill's last season on the series.
Henry Cavill is back for The Witcher Season 3. Netflix released the teaser trailer for the new season, with Volume 1 set to release on June 29 and Volume 2 on July 27. The upcoming season will be Cavill’s last before he is replaced in his role as Geralt of Rivia by The Hunger Games actor Liam Hemsworth.
The new teaser only reveals 45 seconds of footage from the season, but the small sample promises big action, magical duels, and of course, lots of monsters. Henry Cavill opens The Witcher Season 3 trailer by stepping through a doorway into an ominous tunnel. His eyes darken to face a threat off-screen, and he draws his sword. “Now, for the first time, I understand real fear,” he says in voiceover.
Henry Cavill will continue his partnerships with actors Freya Allan and Anya Chalotra, who play Ciri and Yennefer, for Season 3. The trailer shows the trio on the run and afraid as they face down mysterious and frightening opponents.
Henry Cavill has had a complicated tenure on The Witcher that, despite adoration from his fans, has led to Season 3 being his last. The actor has reportedly found the show’s schedule and overseas production a challenge while balancing his busy slate of projects. It has also been said that Cavill signed a short-term deal with Netflix, and he is simply ready to move on.
The internet, however, has conjured controversy from the situation. An outspoken super-fan of the show’s source material, Cavill has reportedly been frustrated by the deviations the show’s writers have made from the video games and books the series is based on. The creative team on The Witcher has been accused of actively disliking the show’s source material.
Meanwhile, Henry Cavill has allegedly proved difficult to work with. His encyclopedic knowledge of The Witcher, coupled with his purported “gamer bro” attitude, apparently concocted a toxic attitude on set that made Season 3 the last straw. Claims on both sides of the divide between Cavill and the show’s creative team have not been thoroughly corroborated, blurring the true reasons for Cavill’s departure.
It was announced that Henry Cavill would be replaced in The Witcher after Season 3 at nearly the same time DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn announced that the actor would be replaced as Superman after nearly a decade in the role. Both announcements shocked the series’ fandoms, given Cavill’s outspoken love for the roles.
Following his cameo in last October’s Black Adam, Henry Cavill took to social media to proclaim his return as the Man of Steel. Variety even reported on the alleged return, only for Gunn to retract the triumph shortly after. Since then, Cavill has circulated the rumor mill, apparently competing with the likes of Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth for the lead in the Highlander reboot.
Henry Cavill may be out as Superman and Geralt, but his fans have one last chance to see him in The Witcher Season 3. Beyond that, he will appear in Matthew Vaughn’s espionage thriller Argylle and Guy Ritchie’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. Cavill is also rumored to be in talks with Marvel Studios, which could add him to the growing list of actors to play characters in both of the major superhero franchises.
Wherever he goes next, Henry Cavill has a strong fanbase that will follow him just about anywhere. This summer, they will follow him back into the world of The Witcher to witness his final stand as Geralt of Rivia in Season 3 of the hit fantasy series.
