Next month marks three years since we’ve last seen Henry Cavill as Clark Kent/Superman in 2017’s Justice League. Yet according to a new rumor, it seems as though Henry Cavill would like to once again play Superman in the future.

In a rumor from We Got This Covered, Henry Cavill has supposedly talked to Warner Bros. about the possibility of headlining a Superman TV series, which would air on the HBO Max streaming service. Earlier this year, Deadline reported that Henry Cavill was interested in reprising the role of Superman, but not in his own standalone film, leaving it theorized Cavill might appear in future cameos. The article didn’t mention in what form Cavill would appear again as Superman, but outside of cameos, a television series would certainly make sense.

Henry Cavill leading an HBO Max series also adds up to the streaming platform’s dedication to DC Extended Universe content. 2021 will see the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, which will also feature Henry Cavill as Superman. Matt Reeves has also previously announced that he plans on making an HBO Max series that will act as a sort of prequel to his The Batman, which is now scheduled for release on March 4, 2022.

That doesn’t mean that Henry Cavill couldn’t also make cameos in upcoming DC Extended Universe films, however. While Wonder Woman 1984 and The Suicide Squad seem unlikely, since both are finished shooting, there’s still plenty of other films in development. Director Andy Muschietti has already said that The Flash, planned for a November 4, 2022 release, will have multiple Batman actors like Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton, it could theoretically include Cavill’s Superman as well. In addition, Cavill could appear in Aquaman 2, releasing December 16, 2022, and Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam. But most likely would be Shazam! Fury of the Gods, scheduled for June 2, 2023, since the first film ended with a supposed “cameo” from Superman.

But as we’ve recently reported, maybe the biggest obstacle against another Superman series is that we could potentially have a ton of Superman series coming soon, without Henry Cavill. January 2021 will see the release of Superman & Lois, a spinoff of Supergirl, which will star Tyler Hoechlin as Superman and Elizabeth Tulloch as Lois Lane. There’s also been rumored that Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum have been mulling over the idea of a possible Smallville animated series. But again, with The Flash proposing multiple Batmen in one universe, why not throw an extra Supes into one of these shows for fun?

Surprisingly, Henry Cavill seems to have a relatively open schedule at this time, so a Superman TV series starring him could be doable. This month, Cavill will be involved with reshoots for Zack Snyder’s Justice League – three years after that film’s release – and Cavill will also have The Witcher’s second season coming to Netflix in the near future.

It seems sort of odd for DC’s major characters like Batman and Superman to get their own television shows, while lesser-known characters like Black Adam and Shazam! Make feature films, but maybe this could be the beginning of a new era for a larger television DC extended universe?
